Dead pixel on LCD tv

Posted by: Occean on 09 January 2006

I have just bought a new Toshiba LCD TV – Toshiba 27WL56 – which I ordered from an online retailer. When it arrived it had one dead pixel – additionally the some of the polystyrene packaging had been crushed indicating a *rough journey*, which I used a reason for potential return, I email the retailer the issues and they offered a replacement, I pay shipping but they will refund etc etc.

I just can’t decide if it is worth it…I hear a lot of panels have dead pixels and I could easily get one back with two.

Also I move into my new house this weekend and it would be so satisfying to have it all setup on night one – which it wont if it is returned.

What should I do?

Hi
I only have experience of LCD monitors as I work in the computer industry. Manufacturers have limits for dead pixels and can differ in what they think is acceptable (some will not tolerate 1 and others will not replace unless 3 or more pixels are affected.
I would try to find out what your manufacturer's return policy is and decide then if you should ask for a replacement.

Computer monitors are graded on the potential "dead pixels". We have 2 monitors one with none one with 2 dead pixels.
I would set my self a limit of none for a TV. Judging by the excessive prices being charged that I would want perfection.

They can also be bloody big and heavy too.

Unfortunately my move involves upgrading lifestyle down-grading house size, and it makes a lot more sense to a 27” flat panel than a CRT of equal or smaller size. Luckily TV is not my thing, I would happily live without one if it wasn’t for my partner!

Nope - decided just to keep it. Other than the annoyance of knowing there is a dead pixel the TV is awesome - I'd recommend to anyone.
