Wall Mounting Speakers...

Posted by: Scott Mckenzie on 29 November 2001

Ok, I have recently purchased some Dynaudio Audience 40's as a bit of a stop gap as the new speakers needed to be wall mountable... Today I picked up the wall mounts (Dynaudio certainly took their time!!)

The main question is, at what height should the speakers be mounted, as I understand poeple will say "tweeter at ear level" however my kit is in my bedroom, and I listen to it when I am working at my PC and when just listening....therefore my ears are at different levels...

The dyn wall mounts are adjustable both horizontally and vertically..so I was thinking about mounting them a little higher on the walls and pointing them downwards so as to be the best compromise...i think this would work as they will be mounted above my head when working, but for plain old listening I will sit further back and consequently if i get the angle right they should sound fine...

My main question then is: Is this a good idea, or would a different method be good? FWIW I cannot go around randomly drilling holes in the wall so I could do with getting it right first time around...

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Due to space limitations I've wall-mounted the speakers in my bedroom system. They're mounted near the top of the wall and angled down and inwards. Obviously this is not ideal but the sound is still pretty decent.

I believe the Dynaudio 40s have rear port which may be a problem if you wall mount them (close to the rear wall).

This is what stops me from buying them and stay with Rega.

If the room's really small you might be able to get more distance between yourself and the music by attaching them to the ceiling and pointing them down.

Just a thought...

The Dyn's do indeed have a rear port, however I checked with Dynaudio and ended up paying a little extra for their own wall mounts. They have been developed with mounting the 40 and 50 and after much hassle last night, I have finally got them on the walls....

For those of you who don't have wall mounted speakers, if someone ever suggests it to you..ignore them!!

It took a while to get them sounding right, but I think I have it more or less right, the main problem being that the Dyn's are very directional and consequently tricky to set up, they both have a slight tow in and I was even brave enough to set them up on the three points of a triangle rule so there is one spot on my bed where they sound absolutely stunning.

A big thanks to Naim for making the NACA5 so easy to work with..I mean its a good job it bends so easily big grin

The bass is a little heavy, however I may stick with it for now without the ports as a fair bit of my music is R&B, Garage etc which sounds good with a little extra welly. Even Eva Cassidy didn't mind have a little more oomph behind her lower octaves, though as I say I have yet to try out the foam bungs.

Basically I am very happy with the sound, much better than my old floorstanders. King, if you like the sound do not be put off buying them as they great little speakers..and work perfectly well near a wall.

Any updates I'll let you know...

Scott,

I'll give it a try sometime later.

BTW, I heard the 40s come with a set of sponge plugs for the ports. Did you use them?
