Just opinion, but for me,
Pablo honey, because you could hear the raw promise of the songwriting & energy.
The Bends, because the promise of Pablo Honey was realised, & for me, it was a superb perfomance.

I don't like it when bands get too much studio time & end up disappearing up their own jack socket. I think this kinda happened to Radiohead for the next few albums, but OK computer is still pretty good.
In Rainbows is back to guitary pop-rock, & is OK, but still no "the Bends".
If I was to only have 1 Radiohead album, it'd have to be The Bends.
Then Pablo Honey,
Then OK Computer.
Thats probably enough, unless you are a comitted fan.
A broadly similar path to REM albums maybe?
Matt.

Don’t get too excited boy although it’s nearly spring
Because the serpent also hisses where the sweet birds used to sing
Some say that some day in one of these fine nights
The council's going to ask Radiohead to switch off Blackpool lights

I would likely agree with manicatel about the three albums to own first. These three (PH, TB and OKC) are accessible and great quality music. Kid A and Amnesiac are more "difficult" but very rewarding once you get into them. In Rainbows is a return to earlier styles perhaps. It is certainly an easier listen than HTTT. HTTT remains the one I listen to least.

Disclaimer: I personally think they are the best band in the world in that genre. I saw them for the second time two weeks ago here in Vancouver and they were astonishing.

Don't forget to have a listen to "The Eraser" - Thom's solo album. Moody electronica and very, very good.

Well, we're agreed then. I thought you were wanting to know which ones to buy/listen to Roll Eyes....

The Bends for me too. Full of energy.

I could make a very good album from the best of Kid A and Amnesiac. OK Computer seems to have become one of those albums to stand back and admire rather than really love-and I just never seem to listen to it now. I thought HTTT really uninspired but 'In Rainbows' a return of sorts.

I hated 'The Eraser', thought it was drab and self-indulgent!

For the newcomer I'd suggest getting OK Computer as it gives the broadest flavour of what they are about. If you like that and you like guitar/indie music, work backwards to The Bends and PH. If you like the experimental/electronic stuff, work forwards via Kid A to In Rainbows.

Me, I like them all, but faves are probably The Bends and Amnesiac.

Has to be "The Bends" for me, rock and role made new and scary again. Some of the guitar sounds on that album are simply mind blowing.

I admire "OK Computer" but I don't love it. "Lucky" is an astonishing song though. Haven't got into the later stuff, but I expect it has plenty to offer.

It depends on what you are looking for, if you want a powerful guitar band playing good songs then 'The Bends'.

If you want polished guitar songs, but breaking away from being a verse/chorusx3 formula, then 'OK Computer'.

If you want to hear a band experimenting with sound, and electronics, then 'Kid A' is excellent.

Personally, Kid A is the only album that I still find satisfying. The albums from before that have dated to me, and on the ones since 'Kid A' Thom Yorke's vioce has become too 'whiney'.

The main thing I find, is that their albums all appeal to different people, all the albums are different people's favourites.
