HDX Update - Patient survived but lost his memory...

Posted by: Lemming on 07 March 2010

The Naim dealer in Greece provided the updating files (downloaded from the Naim site cause the discs are still on their way...) and I did the job. Everything went smoothly and lasted no more than 30 minutes, all the way from 1.4 SP10 to 1.5a.The results are quite amazing compared to the previous situation (flac decoder is far better, networking extremely flexible and easier to establish, sound is yet to be evaluated). However, all the hard disc data were lost!!! (including some rare discs from various music mags). Any comments or feedback out there? Is that what will occur with any future major updates?

1.5 now finally allows the library to be stored to external sources....the Catch 22 comes in getting upgraded to 1.5 - just in case anything happens, as above.... Frown

Hi Steve,

I suspect that you have an incorrect grasp of how the 2nd drive in the HDX works. Of course it is always easiest to make assumptions based upon what you know from elsewhere.

The 2nd drive in an HDX is *NOT* used as a mirror of the primary drive and is managed as a completely independent store. Should the primary drive go down then the unit is none functional until repaired but data can be recovered from either the primary or secondary drives quite easily.

The upgrade process is also staged so as to provide for the best integrity of a users data - the main store and backup store are not processed at the same time so should the processing of one fail then the other should still be completely intact to enable recovery.

Of course this is not a "mission critial" safe solution but is as good as we can reasonably provide in a consumer oriented product.

Cheers

Phil

The humor comment was in response to a direct quote of GFFJ not getting the 'real men don't read manuals' joke of mine even with a Big Grin attached. I would also not be smiling in your circumstance, whatever the reason. Hope the retrieval works out.

Thanks js. By the way, I contacted the dealer and tried to describe the path of actions suggested by Phil. His first reaction was something in the lines of "we can't take the risk or assume responsibilty for something that is not directly linked to hardware issues"...We agreed to email him what we have discussed within the forum and to use it as a reference in his contact with Naim UK...In the meantime I guess I can only listen to music but avoid any further ripping. Right?

Phil - I have just seen your post re the 2nd HD in the HDX....

I didn't know that (had always understood the 2nd Hd was a simple Raid mirror) - and thus stand fully corrected ! Thanks for your feedback.

Along with 1.5 update, it's looking better and better for me....Finally !

We did consider simply having the 2nd drive as a mirror of the 1st but what would happen is that once the unit was out of warranty and the primary drive fails it would then keep running - the end user would shrug and go "I'll get that sorted another time", leave it for a couple more years and then experience that horrible sick-in-the-pit-of-the-stomach feeling when the 2nd drive goes the same way. ;-)

We love our music too and wouldn't want to lose any of it ourselves... :-D

Cheers

Phil
