This Week's 'Later ...'
Posted by: 555 on 16 September 2008
The new series starts tonight on BBC 2 at 22:00. It's a similar format to the previous series; a 30 minute live show tonight, with a longer edited show on Friday (23:35-00:35).
I understand the live show is earlier in the week to allow extra editing time.
(nothing to do with me!)
On tonight's show are Carla Bruni (France's first lady), Metallica, & Kings of Leon.
Last & least are The Fireman, Paul McCartney's collaboration with producer and bassist Martin "Youth" Glover. Which reminds me - I'm still waiting to hear if anyone can lend me a sniper rifle. Remember music fans - at the time of posting it's not too late to change this week's 'Later' line-up!

I like the KOL, & Carla bruni should be nice to look at. I have no idea what sort of music she does.
A McCartney collaboration I can probably live without.
Matt.

A good start.
I suppose everyone is talking about Carla Bruni for all the wrong reasons, just as they did for Jane Birkin, who she appears to be a modern day version of. I thought she was good, as far as it goes.
I didn't like Kings Of Leon when they first appeared, but last night I liked them, so maybe they have changed, or maybe I have, but nothing happened really in comparison with the mighty Metallica!
Even if you don't like their music, you have to admire them their presence and authority when they started playing. I love them and have done since the black album and they really look as if they've come back to form with this album.
Can't wait until the weekend version.

Why the comparison ?

Not a bad start, but Metallica were the only act worth the entrance fee IMHO.
Apologies to all music fans; I didn't 'retire' Macca, he was a no show.

Not really singing outwardly but whispered, breathy, coy and seductive.

I've never been a Metallica fan - for no particular reason - don't have any of their albums - but boy was it great to see a band get up on stage and give it some! Really enjoyed the energy from them.

My 11 yr old nephew has been trying to get me to listen to Metallica for the last couple of years ,I have to say I was impressed last night. Will proably buy the album now ,as for Kings of Leon were their amps on ? their new single could easily have been a track from " Dam the Torpedoes"

It looks as if they did a version of Enter Sandman for the full programme, and THAT will be worth watching. Get the Black album if you have nothing at all, and the new one after if you like it, especially as you'll get the Black album at any shop for less than a fiver.

Actually I thought Kings were good. I'm no fan but recent reviews and that performance have piqued my interest.
Carla Bruni will now never get a fair hearing. To be fair her Sarkozy era album is the worst of her career but it's pleasant enough. Earlier albums are much more interesting.
The star for me though was VV Brown. Been getting great festival write-ups all Summer and I could see why. The song was decent; the voice isn't quite as good as it thinks it is but let's put that down to nervous energy... but that hairstyle is the best thing I've seen in ages.
Metallica - sometimes I am clearly watching something else!!! Good but basically ordinary, moody song. Pootled along moodily and fairly effectively and then explodes into entirely disconnected "instrumental" section which was, frankly, bar 20 seconds of inspired duetting lead, utterly irrelevant to what had gone before and is the sort of thing metal bands have done for around 40 years now to no great gain for listener or player. "Hey, let's rock out and all get a chance to step forward and do our thang!". How embarrassing was that.
Great kudos I thought to the Later production team who switched cameras every single time a band member attempted to gurn and pose for the camera in an attempt to recreate Spinal Tap. What we then got was a great view of some instruments being played that may not have been as funny as the gurning but was sure as hell more interesting. A sad sight.

Ah, ok, I haven't actually seen or heard Mme Sarkozy sing, and only a few songs from La Birkin. Jane Birkin, here, is considered more of an actress than a singer.

I just could never take metal bands after Led Zepplin, everyone's trying to out do the other with flash, noise and preening around the stage.
One time, years ago, I was at a pretty heavy and packed bar in LA with a few beers under my belt and NIN came on the system and TV monitors. I was really taken aback, totally fascinated, and liked their work tho never bought any. Those images and sound worked together very well and had to be taken seriously. Oddly I don't remember seeing any major posts about NIN.
