How to improve the bass from a CDI ?

Posted by: Arye_Gur on 26 November 2001

My system

Lp12/ittok/asaka/armageddon, CDI, nat03, 102/napsc/Hi , 140, IBLs.

The CDI lies on the top of a QS, the TT lies on a cheap metal/mdf stand.

The bass from the TT is much better than this from the CDI and the sound from the TT goes lower than the sound from the CDI.

Is there any idea how to improve the bass from the CDI ?

Hi Arye,

Are systems are quite similar at the moment, except that I use a CDX. I'm afraid that I don't believe that there is any easy way to get better bass from your CDI.

A better Cd player would do it, but I don't know of any quick fix for your situation. Of course my usual advice would be to put the player on a decent stand, but you have done that very nicely. Possibly putting the rest of the equipment on QS could help.

Best wishes,

Bob.

PS just noticed that the CDP sits "on top" of a QS, so I guess that the amps are under this.... rules out my QS idea then confused

Bob,

Does the CDX give you the same bass as the TT ?

I think you are always going to have problems trying to match the bass weight and presentation between CD and vinyl, although a cds2 goes a long way!

Put it on a Fraim! ask Ilan to do you the demo

Sounds like a cue for another politically correct vs slow bloated bass argument..........any takers?...........are IBLs bass light? big grin

arye, get an 82. When I went from 102 to 82 the bass improved significantly. I used both with a supercap, by the way. david.

Have you tried switching places with your CDI and TT?
That could give you some perspective on what's happening.

Also, have you tried your CDI on the bottom shelf? A stupid location but I've noticed CDPs sound better the lower on the rack you go.

I get a feeling that these'll help but by no means will it turn water into wine...

Arye,

I used to use a CDI next to my LP12. The CDI & CDX are both a bit bass shy compared to the LP12. I guess you can't use the player on the bottom shelf because of the top loading. I intend to get an XPS one day & that should get thing a bit more even, for me.

I'm sure Paul S's 'helpful' tip might help, but this will cost. Is your problem more with the quantity of the bass or the quality? I think the quality of bass from the CDI is fairly good. Don't let someone try & persuade you that the IBL's are too bass light. Their bass is fantastic when given the correct information.

Best wishes,

Bob.

PS: you do use NACA5 I hope

As a cdi and ibl (with 82, 2 x hi-caps, and up to date 160) owner who moved in Feb this year to a house* with a solid floor I am now finding my system anything but bass light!

However this* was an expensive upgrade so maybe a Fraim will be a better option for you!

Geoff

I'm another who's definitely not finding his CDI bass light, even when compared to my LP12/ARO/Klyde/Geddon.

I know you've been advised not to change your speakers but my personal experience has been that the thunderous, gut-wretching bass I'm now enjoying just wasn't there when I used Kans or SBLs (I've never heard the IBLs). If anything, the CDI goes deeper than the LP12 in my current system and room. Bass or not, the CDI is an incredible player for the money. I was very strongly advised by several dealers not to change to a CDX unless I was flush, but to spend money elsewhere in my system (pre-amp in my case).

I don't think that the IBLs are bass shy, the problem appeared with the new geddon that is giving the TT a better and much deeper sound compared to the sound with the Valhalla.
I think that the CDI can give more, and I'm going to get for a test a brightstaraudio shelf that comes on the present stand .

Paul Stephenson,
I'm going in a few days with the CDI to Ilan to listen to it on a Fraim with intro2, but this days I can't afford the Fraim.

My CDI is not bass shy compared to the CD3 I had before. The CD3 was compared to an expensive sony cd player and it had better bass than the sony, so I don't really know what to say, for me the CDi does bass.
I have a chord anthem on it, but to be honest its not a major upgrade from the basic naim lead.

Try this...

Disconnect LP12 from mains & amp. Also disconnect any other items except the CDI.

Move LP12 into another room.

Now try the CDI again. Any difference?

cheers, Martin

When I bought the QS, I was told not to tighten it too much. I did so.
Several days ago I tightened it and that
solved the problem with the CDI bass.

I was told that a "tightened" QS makes the music too "hard", I don't find it is true.
