Unfortunately, the free William Fitzsimmons download is UK only.

I've found that with a few sites that it is specific to the country the company originates from.

Can't get it myself.....for internet downloads, counry shouldn't make a difference.

Second that. This is true especially for new webstores that wish to get the potential customers to find their services..

Can't seem to find the Fitzsimmons download in hi-res. Is it 44/16 only?

Fitzsimmons is signed to a big big label called Downtown Records in the USA. And Naim is doing its bit to bring his great music to UK ears. We would get in a great deal of trouble if we distributed it free of charge outside of the UK. We aren't being elitist, trust me!

Only in 16bit I am afraid. Don't beleive in upscaling. Just a quick fix and might help people have a fiddle about with FLAC and WAv etc. Most of the new material we do, even on Naim Edge will be native 24bit here on in.

Here is a link to the test files - extracts that you can download for free to test compatibility and sound quality, other than the Fitzsimmons single.

Very nice work all round!

Agreed - nice site, great layout and very easy to use. Unfortunately (for my credit card) after downloading the free track, a few other downloads followed so i'm looking to having a listen tonight.

Well done Simon and the team - best of luck with it.

Whilst i will probably always buy the CD over a download (especially at such a slim price difference) its great to see this up and running. It has also introduced me to Jump Ship, who sound great. So wins all round!

Yes, sites looks great.

Simon is it possible to have sample downloads such as is currently being done with Deutsche Grammaphone?

Personally I find a quick clip of a track (s) an impossiblity to decide whether or not to buy a CD regardless of file type. I currently audition most of my music from Sonos and then decide to buy.

DG allows you to download a 24 bit flac classcal album for a week so you can demo the album prior to making a decision for a nominal fee which is applied to the total cost if you purchase.

Might something along these lines be a consideration?

Gary - its great that DG can afford to do that!

This site structure was a big step for us and I feel that the streamed 30 seconds of EACH and every track should be enough to help give an impression of what the album is about.

And Munch - I don't even know how to do that, so obviously the powers that be have decided it is important enough for you all to see! Who am I to complain Winker

Having downloaded the William Fitsimmon single as a .WAV file I was slightly miffed that iTunes would not allow me to assign the cover art without creating an applelossless version first.

Does anyone know if this likely to be fixed anytime soon?

Jono, are you on mac or pc and what version of iTunes? I'll investigate.

The WAVs can click and play on any media player, but WAVs do not carry metadata embedded in the file - this could be why it won't let you assign the cover art. if you want clean metadata, the FLAC download (converted to .m4a using Max or Switch) could be more for you. It will convert WITH the metadata embedded.

Thank you for the new downloadportal from NAIM.
The usability is ok. The prices also.
I hope the content of music becomes bigger and bigger. Winker

My first download was Antonio Forcione Gettho paradies.

WAV cannot assign Covers.
You must convert the file in a other format (ALAC/AIFF/ AAC/mp3/FLAC )

Thanks for the advice. I will try the FLAC option later.

Simon,

What is the technical download that you recommend for HDX owners who are downloading to a NAS and then playing through the HDX?

We want to ensure that we have only the tagged files, but no effect of the "player" such as itunes etc... on these files as they get streamed to the HDX. So the question becomes itunes, WMP, download manager, or nothing but the files stored to the NAS?

Thanks

Sorry ... I can't hear a great deal of difference between the 16/44 and 24/96 sample/test Jazz tracks ... don't know if i've got cloth ears?

Using a HDX/555PS BTW

Never listened to 24/96 before but this 15 second clip (not really my kind of music it has to be said) hasn't really done much for me!

Is it just me?
Posted on: 28 May 2009 by Simon Drake
Music and indeed sound are both entirely subjective. Perhaps thats why we both love them so much. Nothing better than the power of opinion.

In 15 seconds I wouldn't expect the difference to floor me.

But those samples more than anything are designed to help make sure they don't waste money on downloading the wrong file type!

The difference between 16 and 24bit is often very musical. There is a density, clarity and timing that maybe you can't acheive with 16bit. But to those, who can't hear the difference, maybe CD quality is more up your street. The files are smaller, durable...and cheaper. And still sound amazing!

This is the perfect scenario for 24bit WAVs!

If you download an entire album, you have the option of downloading a ZIP file with the external metadata that the HDX reads (from AMG All Media Guide). If you arrange the music in a file structure such as:

Artist Name / Album Name / Tracks

Unzip all the AMG metadata at the same folder level as the Tracks (it includes thumbnail cover art) - and it should return all of the info you need to browse through Naim Hi Def downloads cleanly and simply.

I would recommend using a download manager to get the files (which as you know are quite large!). Please see the FAQ for more details.
