a lot of us on this forum, will have both CD and vinyl replay, big questain is, is CD preferable than vinyl or vice versa in terms of overall sound quality and ownership values???

That is a question. Another is whether the music you like is available on the format you prefer.

When I had records I was very anal about lending them or playing them on record players that I thought might damage the grooves. The cleaning was a pain & I would be forever listening for crackles and clicks and get upset when I heard a new one. There are lots of advantages to CD, playing them in the car for instance is a life-changer, so the sound quality and ownership values thing are two very different subjects.

It is easy to forget the excitement surrounding the first CD's. I recall seeing and hearing a CD for the first time. It seemed impossibly exotic and clever. Whatever the pros and cons it has been a pretty longlived format when you consider the usual lifespan of electronics developments. I'll wager that i'm still buying Cd's in 10 years time.

I honestly thought Dire Straights Brothers In Arms was the first CD release.

How much do you want to bet?
I too remember looking in wonder at cd players in John Lewis when they first came out. Spent a good couple of minutes pressing the open/close button on one of them. I have an excuse though - I would have been about eleven!

I own copies of the first 2 CDs pressed in the USA. Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA and a sampler of Edison recordings (commemorative, not available for sale).
Only play the Edison one occasionally, can't stand Bruce.
