They do, particularly those with the time-aligned filters, they're about 1dB down at 25k-ish.

Andy,

true ,but then the response remains basically flat out past 50Khz and then very gently rolls off thereafter.

Tuan,

I won't quote meaningless figures but I can confirm that distortion levels outside 20Hz-20Khz are no greater than within this bandwidth on Naim amps (if anything they are in fact, fractionally lower).

..........and that is assuming that the original recording is free from distortion - intentional or otherwise.

I'm a bit puzzled by that Richard. The filters are 18dB / octave, with a 3dB point around 45k or so, IIRC.

Not my definition of basically flat or gentle roll-off Wink

Not that it matters, the other important aspects of the filter are good, and the amplitude response has nothing to do with the discussion on distortion anyway, as started by Tuan (except in as much as it improves the distortion performance of the power amps...).

Tuan,

I don't understand this!

You said that Naim haven't released an SACD or DVD-A player, and I told you that Naim have just released a DVD-A player.

This has nothing to do with what you watch your movies on.

(AFAIK, all DVD-A players are also DVD video players???)

Martin

I may be wrong but looking at the picture, it seems that the new DVD-A was aimed for home theatre set-up and look at the box, it seems that it was the series 5 quality (slim case design). Here in Canada, the DVD players also play DVD-A. It is great that Naim starts exploring the high resolution market with the series 5 entry... I was hoping that the SACD feature will be in the CDX2 level but it was not the case. Well, I bought the CDX2/XPS2 since I like the sound with my CD collection... and yes for movie I stick with SONY TV and DVD player.

Tuan,

re SACD, you will have a very long wait!

from what I have been told, SACD is irredeemably a Round Earth format, with no hope (at least as the hardware stands at the moment) of a Flat Earth-compatible player being produced.

DVD-A, being a multi-bit format, is not so ham-strung, thus the new player.

cheers, Martin

Andrew,

I've not heard it.

I presume that you have, and that it does the Flat Earth stuff?

cheers, Martin

A question to Martin:
who told you that SACD is Round Earth? And analogue is Round Earth, Flat Earth or both?
SACD is the music format of choice for the music lover, be it round, flat, cubic or whatsever.
Cheers, Betton

Rico,
I forgot to mention analogue, of course.

Reviewing Martin Payne's photo on the previous page- are the Naim logos on the "i" gear simply plaques, or are they the standard green-lit logos?

Also, I might have missed it here- when are the CD5i, Nait 5i, and Arriva being launched in the US?

Thank you.

Betton,

I have two friends with SACD players.

One of them is much more into the timing and rythmic aspects of the sound than the other, and he eventually ditched his Sony SACD1 in favour of a good CD player.

The old player was very flat and boring, in comparison.

The other friend has a Sony 777, I think, and this seems to have a similar character to the sound.

I also believe that Naim would have released an SACD-capable player if they could make it work on their terms.

cheers, Martin
