Oldest component still in use in your system
Posted by: Kevin-W on 10 June 2003
I'm not sure if this topic hs been posted before (I remember one about Naim components with low serial numbers), but I'd be intrigued to know who's got the oldest component in their system.
My NAC 62 is 13 years old, the NAP 160 is 16, the LP12 is of 1987 vintage but my Heybrook HB1 speakers are no less than 19 years old and still working perfectly (a couple of drive units had to be replaced recently as they'd gone soft, but that's it).
Anyone else?
Kevin

Hi
My Isobariks are of the same vintage and they sound fantastic, and they have never needed any drive units (nothing else applicable as they are active).

Jim

My first system was purchased in 1991 and is still being used by a friend. Sherwood amp and Philips CD player from our friends at R***** Sounds, the speakers are newer Tannoy M1's and it still sounds a darn sight better than any Midi system.

Is Naim the only way forward?

Thorens TD124, 1962
I obviously don't buy it new myself, as I was not even born in '62
,
Use it daily.

Chrome bumper 250 circa 1983 when I was fresh out of uni. It has had a full Naim recap though as it popped a capacitor about 1997. My sis still has my uni sytem up and running Dunlop Systemdek, A&R A60, Heybrook HB2 all from 1980.

A mint, unmodified, factory built (not a kit) Dynaco ST70 amplifier from 1970. Has never been repaired, just fresh valves a few times since I bought it new. Now resides in a den system. Still sounds lush and musical, especially on FM with the matching Dyna valve tuner. An oldie but a goodie.
Oh, and if memory serves, it was approx US$60 new.

Technics M-65 cassette deck from 1980, never served, still sounding really good, not using it very much though. Sounds best with normal tape (not chrome or metal), and no noise reduction on. It has survived a Lenco amp, a Tandberg and a NAD reciever, now sounding better than ever connected to a nait3.

This belonged to my parents and now I use it in my "home theater" system (yes, I have a lame 2-channel home theater set up). The Fisher still works great, but I'd love to find some replacement brass tops for the little knobs on the front.
Second oldest are my 'Briks, from '81.

Hmm, my oldest kit is my Nait-2 form '89.
O, I remember, I've also still got my Linn Kan-1's from around '85/'86. (boxed and for sale though, although not a sole in Holland seems to want 'em)
regards,
Alco

1977 LP12. Had Valhalla and Nirvana upgrades done many years ago. Recent upgrade to NAC 202 without Stageline so far means it's probably a good time to get it in for a service and whatever upgrades can be done.

My dad's old Sansui TU-9900 tuner. 1976.
The last hi-fi component he ever bought due to my arrival. Still works flawlessly.
Seems to go for ~700 USD on E-bay!
I've loaned the matching AU-9900 integrated and my Kytes to a friend and I wonder how I'll get them back.

I have a pair of 1959/1960 Ge'Go Orthophase loudspeakers which were built under licence by the Radio People Ltd Hong Kong.
They were very similar in size to QUAD ESL 57 but used planar ribbon diaphragms.
I still use Quad 11 power amps which are about 1963, they still sound great.
regards David

Wow! Of course by mentioning it I was secretly hoping that someone would have a clue about these. So thanks undertone!

The oldest component in my main system is the 135s which drive the bass on my DBLs - 1985. The other 135s are '87 & 89, and the 52 is from '91.
The NAXO3-6 (now boxed) from my Isobarik setup was also 1985, although it received a pukka mainboard replacement to upgrade it from NAXO3 spec sometime before I acquired it.
The NAIT2 in my 2nd system (sson to be permanently located in a new room) is also 1985, and sounds great.
cheers, Martin

Hi,
My 2nd system has a Akai AM-U110 amp
which I bought in 1982. A Manticore Mantre turntable and Mission 771e speakers keep it company.
