Loft insulation fitters - Aberdeen....

Posted by: arf005 on 10 June 2005

Folks,
never mind the padded cell, I'm thinking about our padded loft!

Quick search on the net revealed only three installers in the Aberdeen area - Aberlag, Northern Insulation Engineers, and Scarf Ltd.

We'd like to sort out the loft insulation before the winter, out with the old and in with the new.
Before I go chasing quotes and base my decision on cost only, I thought I'd ask on here if anybody has had previous experience of any of the above, or could you recommend anybody....??

Cheers,
Ali

It is so easy just DIY. But a filthy job and wear protective gloves and clothes.

Hello Ali

As David says, DIY! (assuming you can)

The fibreglass can be ordered pre-cut into the same widths as the spacing of your ceiling joists.

Wear decent clothing, including a long sleeved shirt, gloves, trainers and a facemask.

Don't do it on a hot day.

Get as thick fibreglass as you can cope with (do you use your loft for storage?) but make sure the fibreglass is clear by about 4" from the underside of your roof covering/felt at the eaves to let any air flow through.

If you decide to put any storage platforms in the loft after insulating, put them on bearers so the underside of the platform is a few inches clear of the top of the fibreglass.

If there is any old insulation in place, it may be prudent to leave it there and lay new on top of it rather than remove it. If the old insulation is the full depth of the ceiling joists, lay the new perpendicular to get best insulation effect.

If you have any downlighters in the ceiling, cut a nice large clearance hole around the downlighter (say 6" clearance) and do not cover it!

Finally, if you have a water tank in the loft, do not insulate beneath it.

Best of luck, Julian
