Auteurs/Luke Haines

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 07 February 2003

Listening to a few dusty CD's from the back of the cupboard last night I re-discovered 'New Wave' and 'Now I'm A Cowboy' by the Auteurs. Some great stuff here, track on the latter called Lenny Valnetino had me jumping around the room!

Anyone explored more of the Auteurs output-or Luke Haines subsequent projects like Black Box Recorder etc?

I've got

Auteurs - New Wave and After Murder Park
and
Black Box recorder - England Made me.

All are excellent. Black Box clearly have a female vocalist but otherwise I would have thought you should like this if you like the Auters stuff. The first two Black Box albums were very well reviewed but the latest one no so well.

Bruce , I can highly recommend BBR - Facts of Life - very dry and witty.

Bruce -

Lenny Valentino is a great song, but (is it my imagination?) a terrible recording. The other Auteurs album I really liked was 'After Murder Park' which is slightly different to the first two - much more electrified.

Black Box Recorder are fantastic. The Facts of Life is v good, but England Made Me (the first LP) is the best. Caution: it is extremely depressing. The singer's name is Sarah Nixey.

Luke had another little project out a couple of years ago called the Oliver Twist Project. It was his brave but doomed attempt to stand up to pre-packaged pop. Pre-packaged everything in fact. Sadly it wasn't actually a very good LP.
