Forum Rugby Club - 2009-2010 Season

Posted by: JWM on 10 July 2009

Well it's just about mid-July; the Lions have been, been cheated, and gone; so it must be time to start thinking about the new season. Smile

Lots of new faces in most GP clubs, plus of course Leeds now. (Cockers running Leicester, Deano running Quins, Backie running Leeds - these Tigers get everywhere! Winker) And of course Tigers are looking forward to giving out the usual mauling, but this season with a brilliant new stand and a new home kit (to be launched on 24th July). Sorry Sharlene, I'm spending my clothing allowance on that, not some bloomin' Naim T-shirt...!

As I've said before Mark, with Varndell just wait until the weather starts getting cold...

Tigers - good to see a positive reult and Staunton's boot so far this season seems to be a making up for the loss of Dupuy back to France. And the Tigers' scrum - usually a strong point - gave more of an indication of coming together after the indifferent showing at Sale. Need to start putting on some tries though. This having been said, Tigers had a slightly tentative start last season, and didn't too badly at the end. Cool

Don't count your chicken yet, Mark. Razz

Welford Rd open day today. Sadly can't go myself. But from the piccies, the new Caterpillar Stand and re-laid turf look superb. The Tigers' traditional stripes look really good on the new seating.

Already over 20,000 tickets have been sold for the first home game, with still a week to go.

Just seen some highlights on ITV4 player, and realised why Varndell is, perhaps, doing something this season. He's no longer wearing (or perhaps no longer permitted to wear) those stupid show-off gawdy boots. If his enormous ego has been brought down a peg or two, perhaps he'll start playing for the team instead of himself.

Morning men, just seen the forum members pictures and it was a bit of a shock to say the least.
I have had a picture in my mind up until know that
JWM was a slim tall chappie with chiseled looks and Chilkram was a ogre of a bloke like myself seems the opposite way round now. Not so good for the pests supporter then if we meet up at a game and he gets cheeky between us JWM Winker

Were you the scrum half James?

Funnily enough, no.

But strangely, I have coxed a rowing VIII...

DEADLIFTER - how are your littl'un and missus getting on?

Donna and the little fella are doing great , he came home yesterday late afternoon. Last night was rather interesting to say the least but he only kicked off once and we soon realised that we needed to have his food ready to go the minute he wakes up and puckers his lips

Takes after his dad then? Big Grin

If you don't have Sky (as I don't) you might like to know that Sky are showing this afternoon's Tigers v Newcastle game as part of their 'free taster weekend' on Freeview Channel 11. 5.30-7.30pm. Inevitably, I have to do something else... Roll Eyes

Rugby League may not be your cuppa ,but there was an horrific injury to Cez Walker in the Leeds game last night! Chez Walker

Sky coverage - don't much care for the ringing bell, like a computer game, every time an info banner comes on and off. It would irritate me very quickly if I had Sky.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ......oh, has it finished?
Posted on: 19 September 2009 by JWM
Yes, Newcastle were a bit boring weren't they?

Tigers weren't great (yet) but neither were they bad. They won afterall. And the defence was solid. Also, I liked some of those new signings.

As I've said before, Tigers had a pretty slow start last season, and they hadn't do too badly at the end of it...

Certainly does,i have been known to get my arse in my hands when the tanks are empty Big Grin
I was present at the game at welford road yesterday, me and the mrs were right up in the gods of the new Caterpillar stand at the clubhouse end and i have to say the new stand is superb with a great view of the game and coupled with a ref link in one ear i enjoyed the whole game.
Quite a few say the game was boring but the falcons are no fools and both teams seemed evenly matched and in the end a win is a win

Posted on: 27 September 2009 by JWM
No, Tigers score TWO tries.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we had a slow start to the GP last season, and look where we ended up...

OK, so Tigers are a bit off-colour at the moment, but even off-colour Tigers are in the top five and still well within touch of the top.

Just got home from Leicester dropping no.1 daughter off at Uni for the first time (rather moist eye occasion, but then real men also eat quiche), and we drove through the city to have a look at the ground. What a beast that new Cat stand is! Even the Missus and no.2 daughter were impressed. It looks absolutely fab! Can't wait to be in it. (Though son and I will be in Crumbie for Worcester next Saturday.)

Oh really? I hadn't even noticed!

Well, yesterday for Tigers vs Worcester we SAT for the first time in the Crumbie stand. It's great that rugby is such a family-oriented game (at Tigers anyway), and we had a better vantage point, but as my son commented it wasn't quite as "manly" as the friendly jostle of standing on the Crumbie Terrace!

Anyway, the match. Another win (and a Try!) but like the curate's egg, good in parts. Tigers, with not their full-force squad, gave some impressive displays of real handling excellence and dynamic imaginative passing play, but also some defensive errors still.

Worcester at times looked hard up against it, but were still dangerous, taking their chances when they came.

It has to be said, though, that Worcester really did have '16 men' on the field, because many of the chances they took came from some appalling refereeing by the notorious Chris White.

At one stage the touch judges were pro-actively telling him things rather than acting as back-up. He missed loads. And time and time again he was giving Worcester the benefit of the advantage, which they used, but then, anything up to a minute later and having got the ball more than 10m further forward, when they committed a knock-on or whatever, he kept going back for the original Tigers' knock-on or whatever.

Clearly everone says 'the ref needs glasses', it goes with the territory. But the Tigers' crowd are generally a fairly knowledgable lot, who above all like good free-flowing rugby, which was not happeneing largely because of poor and negative refereeing. The Tigers crowd are also a fair-minded lot, for example maintaining silence at kicks, which ever side's kicking, and applauding good play from both sides. I have never known before such a level of booing and slow hand-clapping at the ref's consistently poor act.

Aw, boo-hoo!

Anyway another win for Wasps and no complaints about the ref!

4 wins out of 5 and our best start to a season for years, including those during which we have won the premiership. Mmm, nice!
