new bond song

Rented 'die another day' last night. Ugh, Madonna sounds like a bad copy of Daft Punk - terrible.

Terrible, yes but...
I've bought the DVD, it came with a free CD of the Madona song and the JB theme. Quite impressive at high volume on a CD3+552+300+NBL and on a CDX2+XPS2+282+SC2+SNAXO+Hicap+2*250(new)+SL2, the bass is so tight.

All opinions are my own, and reflect those of the organisation i work for, even if not stipulated.

The theme to DAD is ghastly (though the rest of the film is a tremedous piece of nonsense, ticking off all the boxes that make Bonds so much fun with aplomb).
I really think they ought to get Alison Glodfrapp to do the next one: Felt Mountain showed a wonderful John Barry-esque soundtrack sensibility and Black Cherry shows she (and cohort Will Gregory) isn't stuck there. And given it's Bond, the fact that she's a she and not entirely unattractive at that isn't exactly a barrier...
I suspect that Goldfrapp aren't mainstream enough (by which I mean proven revenue generators rather than anything else) to get the gig, but we can live in hope.

Manu,
I would have wondered if the CD player was broken!
Pete,
I agree - very silly but a lot of fun.
While I have heard of Goldfrapp, I'm not familiar with their music. Can you recommend an intro disk? Can you describe their sound?
cheers,
Dan

Goldfrapp would get my vote for the next Bond theme, too. AFAIK they have only released two albums; Felt Mountain and Black Cherry. Both are excellent, with my preference being for Felt Mountain. Describing their music is difficult, imagine 60's film music crossed with modern melow dance/chill out music with one of the best female singers around today. You have probably heard their music, though, it was the whistling tune used in the Garly Oldman mobile phone advert.

Poor sad Madge didn't seem to get the point of a Bond theme, did she? [i.e. you don't write it about yourself]. I still think it's the worst track on the otherwise admirable American Life, but Mirwais' 'skipping' effect, which I initially found very irritating has sort of mellowed. Still not very good, though.
I think the perfect candidate for a future theme would strangely be the Pet Shop Boys, with guest female vocalist [girls work better]. Neil Tennant could milk any cultural references that might need to be milked in his sleep, and with Dusty sadly no longer available, Liza would more than do - or David McAlmont doing his Bassey thing if there are budget constraints. Bond themes are major musical camp events which have to pay lip service to a grand tradition, and anyone who doesn't cotton on to this [and it has to be said Ms Ciccone was undoubtedly a good choice on paper] is doomed to failure.

I think Goldfrapp would be excellence (BTW, Dan, my preference is for "Black Cherry" as an intro disc - just to confuse you!)
Throb's suggestion of the PSBs is good too. What about Beth Gibbons as guest vocalist?
