Converting WMV to something I can watch on my DVD player

Posted by: Guy D on 29 January 2006

Have just spent my first weekend editing hours of home video into stunning cinematograhy using Windows Media Player. OK so I can watch on my pc, or my wife's laptop, but how do I convert it to ?MPEG1 so I can enjoy it on my telly?

Thanks in advance.

Have you considered DVI TV-out? This was offered to me as an option when I thought I needed a new computer recently. I'm not sure this facility can be obtained by simply sticking another card in the motherboard. I also heard there is a new Media Centre Edition XP Software from Microsoft. No doubt the computer heavyweights will overcome their shyness after a few more drinks. Smile

About 26 months ago I was in similar situation after purchasing DVD/VCD burning PC. I chose to use Nero 6 etc to burn/occasionally convert stuff, and to browse around for e.g. free programmes - I searched through relevant video-making etc sites.

Since then, I still use (apart from Nero 6) TMPGenc

http://www.tmpgenc.net/

which still does the little video (e.g. WMA to VCD-DVD) conversion I need. Possibly others can advise on newer better progs., but that one is still my most used/favourite.

Have you got Nero 6 or newer?

Also depends on your dvd players capability of course...

Sadly I don't have Nero anymore. But I shall try the above. Will have to wait a day or two as I am forced to work this evening. Thanks.

TMPGenc is what the geeky kids on the P2P forums seem to recommend. I've never had any problems with it. Very utilitarian looking, but it gets the job done.

OK progress is being made.

Using TMPGenc to convert to a .mpg file and then a program called Sonic (I found on my pc!) to burn a VCD I can get images on the TV.

But they stutter every now and again, and quality has clearly been lost in all the convertions.

Any further ideas?

... don't know if that 'Sonic' is same as 'Sonicstage' thing that came with this Vaio, which I tested then reverted to Nero 6 (which does some converting) as well as for me in over 2 years being reliable in burning a heck of a lot CDs etc/quite a few DVDs & VCDs...

Success Smile

Nevo 6 Reloaded purchased for £29.99. Installed no problems, updates a little irritating but done.

The video editing software is crap but it converts .mwv into DVDs a treat!

Thanks all.
