iPod touch

Posted by: worm on 09 February 2008

Just bought an iPod touch - have to say it is one of the most fun things I have owned - and that is without having upgraded the software yet.

Would love to see the touch able to be the interface for Naimnet.

Back to playing...

Cheers

Love my iPod Touch too - especially since the recent point 3 software upgrade with mail and Google Maps.

Sound quality not as good as my old 2nd gen iPod though. It would be interesting to hear it through the new Krell dock, which claims get a digital feed from the iPod, bypassing the built-in DAC. I wonder if Naim could do something similar!

Noticed that Apple have just released a 32GB Touch.

This is big news indeed if true. Does the Touch have a different dock connection then? I suspect the Krell, and any other dock, can only actually access an analogue output from the dock slot.

I don't see any reason why it couldn't, when you're playing files from your iPod on a computer with the pod to USB or Firewire cable it's streaming the file not taking an analogue signal from the iPod.

You are correct, of course.

In fact I'm wondering how many docks actually already do this, most of the good ones attach to the data connector (including the one in my car) rather than the analogue jack and I'm having trouble thinking of a reason why apple would have put an analogue out on that data connector strip!

Hmm, don't have one for my hi-fi, and don't think Audi or my insurers will be too impressed if I take my car to pieces and can't get it back together again. Will have to wait until I'm over at my parents and take apart my dads Bose Soundock and see if there's a DAC in there!!!

My bad, there is a line-output on the dock-port (been brushing up on my 'pod jargon), I still keep wanting to take apart every dock I see to see if any of them use a DAC rather than the line-out though!

There is cetainly a line out on the dock-port, and control connections, and that is what your (and my) Audi uses, but I was previously unaware of any digital output from the dock-port.

I don't imagine there is a PCM output, you'd need some sort of USB compliant reader. Don't think Krell are being that original, the big name consumer electronic brands already have USB plugs on the front of their mini-systems and even car stereos that allow you to access the music that way and the 'pod justs acts as a drive, the 'pod input on the NaimNet works the same way apparently.
