Naim Nait 5

Posted by: Nuno Baptista on 11 July 2002

Hello :
My Nait 5 amplifier is lacking dynamic! What are the reasons?Maybe the problem is my qued anni
versary cables or my Nad 540
source?I´m asking because I´m thinking to change the cables to Naca 5 to fix the problem! What you think?Someone got the same problem use another cables instead NACA 5?

Nuno,

There are two separate issues here. First the speaker cables. Get NACA5, you know it makes sense. Naim amplifiers were designed to use it, its not expensive and it does improve the sound of the system (I changed from NACA4 to NACA5 recently and it tightens everything up very nicely!) This won't cure all your problems - source first! but will certainly not add to them.

Longer term, upgrading your CD player will probably be the best bet. Did you try that s/h Planet you mentioned in a previous post? I think the general concensus was to buy it then sell it or trade it in when you can afford a CD5 or to stick with what you've got until you can afford the CD5. It would appear that you are still not happy with what you've got at the moment!

Nuno,

Lacking Dynamics ? It's most probably the CD player I have the same amp as you and dynamics are not a problem. But, I have a dedicated mains which greatly improves a CD player, giving more resolution and better dynamics, more analogue sound if you like. You can't go wrong with the NACA5, which do have great weight and presence to the sound and they are recommended by Naim, 99.7% of all known Naim users use NACA5. I guess it's just a shade expensive in Portugal, say 12 € per metre ?, but honestly it's very good value for money.

I demoed my Nait using a Planet 2000 as a source and B&W CDM1NT as speakers, and it convinced me. You should be happy with your Nait it's a very fine amp.

...first. A Flatcap2 will improve the Nait, but if you hook a CDX to the Nait you will hear that the Nait does dynamics rather well.

Ok guys,no worry I think it´s the cables:I need the Naca immediatly! They cost just 10 Euros
BTW,If I buy the Planet can I add the flatcap 2 and improve the sound or it´s better waith until buy cd 5?

Nuno,

You are on the right track regarding the cables. Despite the various statements made about this cable or that cable, the fact is that the NACA5 cable is designed for Naim amps. It is part of the amp design. It's in the dang owners manual!

Adding the FC2 to a system with a Planet will make some improvement to the preamp section of the Nait, but It will not make nearly the improvement that the CD5 will. The CD5/Nait5 combo is just great! When you add the FC2 later, it will be like Christmas, and the hook will be set a little deeper. wink Hold out for the CD5!

Good Luck ! DCT

is growing fast, and he has decided to blame his amp. If your Mullet groweth too fast, it is because the scissors to cut it are blunt, and not because you are using the wrong shampoo... wink

Nuno,

You are rightfuly dissatisfied by the noises coming out of your speakers.

Denial forces you to conclude that the amplifier lacks dynamics when deep down, you know it is your source component.

The Rega Planet will also more than likely lack those dynamics you are striving for.

Steve.

PS:

Nuno, you can't add a FC2 to a Planet, and just adding it to your Nait will only speed the Mullet's growth.

You need to wait for the CD5. A demo of the CDX however, will prove the point.

Regards,

Steve.
