nirvana

i've never really been a fan of posthumous "best of" albums. always seems like a pretty cynical way of the record industry to make money out of someone who is no longer around to benefit from it, so i was a little disappointed to see the "new" nirvana album out in the shops. it's especially annoying to see it advertised with an extra "previously unreleased track", which adds to the impression that it's the money men who had the idea of the album, rather than the band itself.

having said that, it wasn't too expensive, had a good track list taken from all of their studio albums so i bought it. what a mug!

anyway...it's fantastic. the first (previously unreleased) track "you know you're right", was recorded just 10 weeks before kurt killed himself, and it's a great song. he's not the best singer in the world, or the best guitarist, but what he does is really impressive.

having not listened to any of their stuff for a while, it's good to hear it again, and to appreciate how good they were. the album is a fine collection of songs, and a good "snap shot" of what they were about.

cheers

"Before kurt killed himself"

Lets not jump to hasty conclusions, some do have their doubts wink

But does it add anything to the previously released material?

it adds one previously unreleased track, which is really rather good. whether you think that's worth £11.99 is up to you!

wink

I felt that this is a money-spinner more than anything else. Only one 'new' song which wasn't that great anyway. A bit of a let-down to say the least.

The surviving members of Nirvana will benefit greatly from it, as will Cobain's widow and daughter. Nothing wrong with that. Also, there are plenty of folks who enjoy the music when they hear it on the radio but don't own any of the albums; they are a likely customer for a compilation like this. Like me.

Matt,

Does the caps key work on your keyboard or are you just thick?

Try the Unplugged lp, it's good.

Courtney Love is such a BEASTLY BITCH! I doubt her daughter will see one red cent. The other guys and Courtney don't need the money! I think ALL the money should go to that poor little girl!

Do you know Courtney personally? Do you have specific evidence that supports your contention that she won't share the money with their daughter?

Regardless, the other band members may not need the money but that doesn't mean they didn't earn it.

"count.d"

yes the CAPS key does work on my pc but i find that i can type quicker without it. if you don't like that, then tough.

yes i have got the unplugged album, and it's very good.

I've never liked 'Best ofs' and only have a couple in my collection. Anyone into this type of music and already owning their 3 key albums will find little here of interest, especially when we can easily make our own best of's today.

However for the casual fan (like Fred say) I'm sure this will be a great purchase (looking at the track listing)
