Two different - and both equally meritorious musical presentations...

Well done Steven. Thats the most complete, erudite catalogue of Hi-Fi cliches so far compiled. I especially liked dewy eyed. My only nagging doubt is that you are so adept at this that you are actually satirising the whole thing. Is there a cliche snappy award?

What is the purpose of this poll? From the questions it seems you know what answer you are looking for.

Thanks for the insider info David. I think I'll leave this thread to the experts.

I could have tried so much harder to do this, but it seemed so much more fun to leave them all in.
I don't hold certain mags in the highest regard, as some of you will know, so the opportunity to perhaps *send them up a bit* was not one to be avoided. wink
My main point is that sometimes you have to make *brainer* choices, and this isn't always easy - hence my dithering on a certain score a few weeks back. smile

why don´t you mix both?
this will end this discussion.

ps: enjoy MUSIC!!!!!

It'll cost a fortune, but I'll ge there in the end!
Meanwhile it is a bit of a trade-off, and one where I am forced to make a choice.
Forced with the same choice, I just wondered which way most people would go.

Steve,

Of course your two hypothetical senarios are biased.

a thrill-factor which implants a big grin on your face that will not shift for several minutes...

We are clearly talking Sony Getto Blaster here. Even the most basic Naim/Krell/ML/Awai system should prolong the grin for hours.

but within a few seconds...... more about goosebumps and dewy eyes.

We are clearly at the top end of the Naim/Krell/ML/Awai ranges.

Your senarios and the poll might have had a bit more credibility if the 'grins' and the 'goose bumps' were of equal duration.

I have always strived for a balance between grins and goosebumps at all stages of my system development. There really is no need to lean one way or the other.

Abstainer!

Cheers

Don

You are entirely mistaken there, James.
What Mana gives I know I can get via another - albeit more expensive route.
Had I gone down the Mana route, I don't think I'd be able to retrieve the overall musicality, i.e: tunefulness, melody, that I seek, without a major change of boxes a well.
It was suggested that I'd like Linn on Mana, and that may well be the case, but it would be the costliest way to achieve what I want, as I would have to ditch all of what I have already.
Tony Lonorghan once said in the "Room 101" thread in The Padded Cell, that he really hated it when people said that Mana couldn't do pitch...
He has since decided to swap to QS Reference on that very basis.

1) Mine is not an all-Naim system.
2) The description entitled "Musical Euphony" is in fact a description of how I heard an all-Naim system on QS Reference.
In fact, it was two different all-Naim systems:

1) CD5/Flatcap2/112/150/Credos.
2) CDX/82/Hi/250/Credos.

Which planet are you on? wink
Me? I'm on the (rather flat) Earth. big grin

I just wanted to see what others would have chose, faced with the same subjective dilemma that I was against.
I don't mind being alone, but it is kind of reassuring to see that I would not be alone in the choice that I have made.
Often we all hear the same things. It is more what we want to hear that may vary - a question of priorities given the expenditure involved.
In many ways, the Mana upgrade path offers the best value for money possible, but not if I personally find that the sonic philosophy is so very slightly flawed.

steven, you´re not alone!!!

be satisfied with what you´ve got.
you made your decision.
you compared both before, so why thinking about that again?
sit back and just relax.
for me it´s not coming home and thinking does it sound in this or that way and do i like this or that more. i made that decision when upgrading.
the other time i just want to relax and enjoy good music.
