Am I crazy?
Posted by: Bas V on 16 March 2002
I have made a rather radical decision. I have offered my total system for sale...
I have decided to move in with my girlfriend and her neighbours even complain when something drops on the floor. Thereby, I don't have the room for proper setup over there. My girlfriend doesn't mind and tells me to think twice. What do you guys think of my idea of selling the bunch and buying something like a Linn Classik + Ninka's for two years or so. Then, when we move to a bigger house, I will buy me a new Naim system.
One other thing, right now I hardly go and sit down to listen to music anymore as my work takes up a lot of time. I mostly listen to music during the 3 hours a day I spent in my car...
Desperate greetings, Bas

<gasp>
The obvious and correct workaround to this horrific problem is to make your girlfriend move in with you. What gal could resist a swinging bachelor pad complete with a swank Naim hi-fi... Hell, there is probably even beer already in the fridge.
As an added benefit, you won't have to move all your stuff. This is always a major pain.
I agree with the above concerning the probable monetary loss coupled with a major amount of hassle and time.

How about two pairs of 'phones?

2. I don't like headphones...
Anybody out there that understands me?
You've got the stuff, you know where it's been etc. Just imagine having to build the same system by buying used gear - might work, might not.
Thomas
Look at it as a banking system.
nice.
in with your girlfriend---extra space does not
translate to more happiness. Think about it carefully.
2) Sounds like you may not be crazy about your
current system and just want it gone or something
new.
Some time ago, I decided to get rid of my old Naim stuff and replace it with a more simplistic system. I went as far as buying a replacement (powerful) integrated amp. However, when I tried using the new stuff I found that my enjoyment of music to severely diminish. Personal feelings/relationships apart, I strongly recommend that you borrow/trial your possible alternatives before you take any action. This will allow you to see if your compromised solutin will still work for you in terms of musical enjoyment. If you are lucky - it will - if unlucky - perhaps you should think again.
Good luck

Hi Bas,
obviously it's quite a decision to move in with your GF. However, you don't need to make an irrational sacrifice such as ditching the system you carefully built over the years. It's an integral part of you.
Moving in with your GF is a good idea (you're probably spending a lot of time there anyways), but the next step is a bigger, better place that is neither hers nor yours. It's the place you're going to together. That's what Thomas is suggesting. Besides, your GF's apartment ain't too big either, evidently.
If you're working this hard (and I bet she does so too) you deserve a bigger place, with a bigger fridge and a hifi you can listen to without the neighbours comin' a knockin'. All these moves are expensive, but don't make them needlessly expensive by selling and buying complete Naim systems.
So regard this move as merely temporal; put the system in your folks' attic for the time being, but on no account sell it. Bas, you're just panicking right now, but you'll be just fine.
Take it easy.
Herman
Another (still rather drastic but more affordable)option might be:
Sell you current speakers or swap 'em for some Xanadu speakers. i tried the Xanadu ASW11 ('bout 1200,- euro/pair) and they sound wondeful on Naim.
Xanadu speakers are designed to sound good also at very modest listening levels, without losing detail or bass defenition.
(another nice thing about Xanadu speakers is that they look very good in high gloss. (piano lak)
if this is no option,ehhh...well,...good luck!
Greetings,
Alco
Classik/Ninka will go plenty loud and equally annoy your neighbours, so I don't think that's the solution.
1. I've regretted 'downgrading' in the past to have a 'simpler' system. Hi-Fi freaks 'disease' may wax and wane, but it never really goes away.
2. You WILL NOT hang onto the money. Have you seen the price of good curtains?
Set up some sort of account to put your profits into -- in my experience anything that ends up even fleetingly in my checking acct ends up going to groceries, car bills, curtains...
I've considered such thoughts myself. But I need vinyl. Wish I didn't but I do.
ON THE OTHER HAND -- better systems sound better at low volumes. Cranking up the volume is the first response most of us have to a poorly resolving set up.
I'm not sure I'm helping. You might be well served buying the replacement before selling the current rig, just to be sure you can live with it.
John
a)you can't hear the complainers
b)they will move away
So, I am crazy. What is buggering me?
1. It will take up too much space, I cannot setup my speakers in a decent way over there. Another appartment is not an option right now, finding space in Holland sucks!
2. I like buying and selling. Strange?
3. I want to buy something new. Maybe other speakers then (which ones???).
4. Would it be a good option to buy a Classik s/hand, test it extensively and then decide? I could even sell my Nat-03 and use the Classik as a tuner only and later on as a bedroom system. The Nat-03 is only good for the looks, I use the regular cable and don't want to place an antenna. I don't believe a regular tune wouldn't sound almost as good and I don't mind either. For me, radio is not something I will sit down for.
Sooooo, any more recommendations? I do appreciate all this, as I am very confused right now (I guess).
Greetz, Bas
BTW I really want to move in with my girlfriend!!!!!! [she's sitting besides me;-)]
Hi Bas,
of course you want to move in with her - I applaud this. However it's just the first move.
1 sure it takes a little effort to find a decent place in this godawful swamp. Nonetheless, getting a bigger place for the two of you is the only way forward. Don't be lazy. College days are over. You're making money. Get a place where you can be your own man (and woman). As soon as you've completed this move-in, the two of you should start looking for a real place. Living together in cramped quarters is the most unromantic thing, trust me. You can find a place within a month if you put some effort into it.
2. If you really want to sell something, I'll buy the Hi-Cap today.
3. Excersice this buying itch towards the apartment hunt, and as soon as you've found one, buy a nice couch where the two of you can sit and listen to the system you almost sold! You won't believe how silly you were back now.

Exactly. One of my next hifi upgrades will be the IKEA Nikkala (sp.?). An ugly bastard of a couch, but moderately priced and supremely comfortable. It's like a triple easy chair - you can almost lie down while still facing forward (i.e. the system).

Mystiques have a particular affinity for SBs though - I think Vuk has had very good experiences with this combo, as did several UK hi fi journalists a couple of years ago.
But like most of these products, their effectiveness depends on the context, etc, etc.

And when you partner it [Classik] with Linn Ninka's it will put you to sleep faster than a few hours of gym with your girlfriend will...
I made the mistake thinking that Linn would only be good for playing music at low volumes nowadays. Bas' potential neighbour is going to be one pissed off bunny.
Maybe a valve based system with efficient loudspeakers would be better suited for that kind of situation. Get your soldering iron out and build a Hi-Fi World or Audio Note amplifier kit. Efficient loudspeakers (such as Audio Note) tend to be good at providing a balanced sound at low volumes.

Don't sell your system. You'll regret it because it's only a short term solution.Buy or rent yourself and your girlfriend a better place to live. You owe it to yourself to make the right decision so don't panick and make hasty decisions.
Regards,Rob.
You like what you've got so stick with it. If you really have limited space, just stack the hifi components on each other. They'll still sound much better than a Classik. As for speakers, provided the room isn't square, they should be able to go against a wall, which will use less space than any other speaker except a sub-sat system.
Finally, move in, set it up (even badly) and just see how you get on. You may find that you're playing at low enough volume that doesn't disturb the neighbours too much. Don't forget, however, that you have rights too. Provided you're not playing music at socially unacceptable levels, you are entitled to play it!
You may have to negotiate with them for what are acceptable levels. There has to be give and take in this and it sounds like they are doing all the taking. You could be constructive by discussing times when it's acceptable to have music up at sensible (not antisocial!) levels. If you don't get anywhere, you can reconsider. If you don't try, you won't even be able to do that!
She must be something, this girlfriend of yours...
Regards,
Frank.

The reason that I'm eager to buy more Naim gear at this time, is because right now I'm living in a student's house. When I finish my education, I will probably get an apartment with my girlfriend and then she'll get a word in it too ;-) Oh well, ***just a matter of getting the right job and the right apartment!*** Speakers are Intro's now, without the REL, and a NAT03 is added. Speaker cables changed from Ocos to NACA5. All Naim now! Latest addition: Flatcap--> HiCap. Update: I have bought a 102+napsc+180 and finished my education! Don't worry, you may still call me Bas.
Yup - the two of you need the right apartment (or the right neighbors ) It seems you have spent considerable time and funds building the system and Frank is right - since you have wall-hugger speakers, there is really nothing out there that takes up less space. I have standmounters that need to be away from the wall - they were a pain in my previous (smaller) place.
