Nait 2

Posted by: Tony L on 21 August 2001

Looks like I have got a nice Nait 2 lined up, and ready to be picked up in the next couple of days (ah, Loot, don't you just love it). It’s a new style CD version. Has anyone had a look inside a Nait 2? What I am interested in is whether it takes phono cards, and if so are they 3 series cards or dedicated ones?

Go on Nait 2 users, pull your amp apart and tell me what lies within wink

I am not bothered if it doesn't take an internal phono stage, as I plan eventually to use an external one anyway, and not having the extra circuitry on board has to be a good thing (it is with Naim preamps anyway). It would however be cool if I could run it with a onboard stage for a while, and I as already have every 3 series board known to man...

From what I remember of my old 'new style' Nait 2, the phono stage was part of the main board. I don't recall seeing any extra prongs for other cards.

Tony,

Unless there's a model of Nait 2 I'm completely unaware of it was never offered with user-configurable phono boards.

Nait 2 has built-in MM phono stage. Non-removeable, and non-config for MC. The only after-dinner trick the Nait 2 has up it's sleeve (apart from playing great tunes, and amusing your guests) is that it can be configured as a standalone plug-in pre-amp, IIRC.

This one is the later CD only option, it does not have a phono stage at all. I had heard previously that this option existed. I suspect in light of the above comments that I have landed exactly the right Nait 2, as I have very little use for a MM stage. This is good, as it means I wont have to waste a input to use an external MC phono stage, and hopefully it will sound "board pulled" compared to the MM version.

Now to think about phono stages... (time for a new thread I think).

Did a trade on a nait-2 for my study system a couple of weeks ago and noticed that the box had "MMNAIT" on it. Does this mean that there was a "MCNAIT" version or was the alternative "CDNAIT"?

No need for a phon stage thread, Tony - you just need a Prefix. at the very least a dual-railed SNAPS to run it. Gotta be in keeping with the character of the system, and probably about the cheapest solution too!

And if we're really sticking to the theme, an LP12 to feed it. Oh well, if you must continue with the P9, Vuk will be able to coment on P9+Prefix.

I didn't know about the CD-only Nait 2. Thanks for putting me straight.

Hi Tony,

Congratulations on your Nait-2!

The Lehmann Black Cube is a very good MC/MM phono-stage for about 250,- UKP.

btw,by now I have my new wooden floor in my livingroom, looks good, but without a carpet my system sounded horrible. (hard and edgy with a big echo) but now, finally it sounds good to me,with the help of a big (170cm x 230cm) carpet in front of the system.

The Nait 2 never had a MC stage. Too near the transformer.

I have the older, chrome-bumpered Nait-2, and it's a great wee beastie. Nearly ended up getting some Kans for it, but BT conspired against me and my email is still rodgered so I lost out.

If anyone has a spare Nait-2, I'd like to buy it to form a second system - the one I have has been 'adopted' by my good lady and I don't think I'll get it back again - she likes it very much, apart from (her words) the MAD volume control with CD (I agree, but it's a known fact)

John

PS. Apologies to anyone who's been trying to contact me via the my-roots.com email - it seems to have died a death recently...

John

you can construct an attenuated interconnect. I think I have the diagram here somewhere, so will send you a copy if it turns up here next few days (big turnout) - e-mail me if you're interested.

John, there's a (old-style) Nait-2 for sale at
web page

click on "verstarker" and then on "vollverstarker"
(which means "integrated amplifier")

They'll sent you the Nait-2 COD.

Alco.

Got my Nait 2. Its a 1992 "CDNAIT" and is in absolutely mint condition, boxed, and even has the manual. It cost me 170 quid. Result! It's currently hiding under my desk at work. The seller works in a building virtualy next door!

The Nait 5 certainly looks nice, and I love the idea of being able to match the inputs for volume, and the fact it can power a Stageline. My logic in choosing the Nait 2 was that I have a Nait 1 and love the sound, and the Nait 2 is allegedly just a little more refined, but still has all the character, I have certainly enjoyed systems I have heard based around the 2. Personally I hate the looks of the 3 series (squashed Nads!), and would have had to pay getting on for twice as much to own one. Word on the street is that the 2 sounds more fun despite not being as powerful, though I can't comment as I have never heard the 3, let alone both in comparison.

Ultimately it was the price that decided it for me, as I want to get as much cash back as possible to fling into my source components, spending just 170 quid on a hopefully competent amp is a real result. Assuming I like it I will obviously need to get it recapped at some point, but I do not need to do that right away. I'm not going to get a chance to listen to the damn thing properly until tomorrow evening...

hmm, even though I don't like the looks and plasticky feel of NAD,I must confess I really liked the sound of a NAD-310. It's simple, their cheapest amp to date, and sounds real powerful, detailed and a has a fair amount of tranparency.
Heck, I had a NAD310 once, and a man who previously owned a Nait-2 said that the Nad-310 came pretty close to the sound of his beloved Nait. (though he always regretted selling his Nait-2!)

C U all,

Greetings,

I lived with a Nad 310 for a couple of months. If it came even close to 50% of a nait, it would be a true bargain. IMHO it doesn't.

Rico - ok, the Kans are sorted, now whatabout the rainforests?

Do you know what one should pay for one of these?

Are we to understand that if no one offers you an acceptable ransom for the rainforests that you intend chainsawing them up in the name of art? I believe this is Brazil's current economic policy.

One went on Loot for 80 quid the other day, though I would say 130-170 is a more normal price. I would bargain for a recap too as I strongly suspect my 1988 Mk 1 Nait is quietly asking me for one. It will get one at some point (nothings leaking inside). I doubt recapping is that expensive compared to the bigger stuff, I will find out soon enough!

IMHO both the Nait 1 and 2 are truly fabulous amps, and sound way better than anything that size or second hand value has any bloody right to.

I was quoted "..about £100" when I emailed Naim a couple of months ago for servicing my 1986 Nait 1.

I suspect the actual cost depends on what they find wrong with it.

Mine sounds OK so I think I'll leave it unless it conks out altogether.

I wonder what was wrong with that one in Loot that went for £80.

If I couldn't get at least £120 for mine I would keep it as a spare or in a second system.

And yes, they are rather good aren't they.

Alex,

I haven't looked lately, but somewhere between £100 and £150, depending on age, condition, service history seems fair.

They're a cracking little amp.

Yeah sad isn't it. Probably a blessing that their budget doesn't run to napalm - at least while men and chainsaws are cheaper...

Canadian $'s.

I bought my Nait 1 from a dealer in 1994. I paid $400.00 at that time. I was told recently by an ex-dealer that the 1 would currently fetch about $250.00. So I would conclude that somewhere around 100-125.00 pounds would be about right.
