RIP Birgit Nilsson

As many will doubtless already know, news of Birgit Nilsson's death over Christmas was announced last week:

Yesterday I listened again to her Tristan (under Solti as opposed to the Boehm recording) and was struck again by the incredible power and quality of her voice, all the more impressive when one recalls that on the famous Flagstad/Furtwangler recording, Schwarzkopf was brought in to sing the high Cs.

Perhaps she'll be best remembered for her Ring cycles (both with Solti and Boehm, the latter yielding better singing on her part, but disappointing in other respects).

It also makes me wonder, particularly since I was too young to have seen her (or the likes of Flagstad and Varnay) live, whether we will see singers of their calibre again? If I think of the two recent Brunhildes I've seen live, they fell a long way short, as do most of the more recent recordings that I own. That said, Nina Stemme, on the recent Domingo Tristan and Isolde was not half bad.

Also, it struck me as interesting that three of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos all came from Scandinavia: Nilsson and Astrid Varnay, both Sweden, and Kirsten Flagstad from Norway.

Yes I heard some excerpts of her work on hte radio last weekend on the opera show. What a voice!

I finally decided to dip into my funds to buy a T&I but didn't know which one. A friend said he'd read good reviews of the recent Domingo one and said if you don't have a good Tristan it all falls apart. So I bought it. Great voices and good production, very clear as a DDD production, but then I know little of music. It is beautiful when I can sit down and focus on it.

An amazing musician with such power and finesse. A rare combination.

It's always sad to see one of the greats go, and she was one of the greats.

Glenn,

I have heard the Domingo Tristan recently and it's certainly very good. However, if you don't mind mono, I would go for the Furtwangler set with Flagstad as Isolde (can't off the top of my head recall who sings Tristan, but he by no means lets the set down). Also, given that it's now lapsed from copyright it can be had pretty cheaply (sans libretto) either on naxos or from EMI.

Set Svanholm, Tam, unless my memory has left for a holiday! I saw this and was VERY sad about Nilsson. Both she and Flagstad were very much Soprano heroes of mine. Apart from the rather different Elisabeth Schumann and Isobel Bailey!

Soon there will no great singers of that very calibre left, for essentially they were both superb technical singers and sublime musicians. The two seem to run less and less together in my view!

In my time in music college we always used to reckon that there were

Musicians

Thespians

and then Singers, who were neither of the above.

Only the very best of them are musicians, and it's these whom we should treasure.

That about sums it up I would think!

Still those Alan Civil Mozart performances give greatest pleasure, and for once I would think it is possible to call them a first recomendation, for the beginer, or anyone one else come to that, so thanks for the disc.

Fredrik,

Actually it's Ludwig Suthaus.

Kevin, I think that's very true.

Dear Tam,

You know what happened to my copy of the [Flagstad] Tristan, and that was nearly two years ago, so in any case I apologise for the mistake!
Cool

Fredrik,

It was my pleasure - I am simply glad to know that it is in good hands and giving enjoyment.
