David Gray - White Ladder's Hidden Track

Posted by: Shayman on 02 September 2002

Forgive me if I'm the last person on earth to know about this and its already common knowledge, but.....this weekend I found a hidden track on 'White Ladder' by David Gray.

Put the disc in and press play, then press and hold << and hey presto.

Sounds like him doing Dylan on a Stars in Their Eyes Celebrity Special.

Bosh,

This was going to be the highest views without a reply subject ever posted.

Now you've ruined it.

Don't understand Bosh. What did you fall for? Is it not there on your copy? Was the extra track only pressed on certain releases of this album does anyone know.

By << I meant fast rewind not previous track button.

Hi Guys,

Shayman is not pulling our collective leg.

I found the hidden track yesterday, once I knew that '<<' signified the audible rewind, not 'track back skip'.

The track is about 2 minutes long, so if you rewind from the start of track 1 when you get to
-2 minutes release the button and away you go. If you overshoot on my Arcam it just starts playing track 1, but if you release in time the display does show track 0. It won't back skip to it though.

The track isn't horrific, but I can't say I'm upset that I've only just found it!

Regards,
Steve.

At least it's a proper hidden track that someone had to find in the first place (how??)

I'm sick to death of these 'hidden' tracks that are simply tacked onto the end of the final track after 5 minutes of silence. (The Coral are the latest culprits in my collection, and the Queens of the Stone Age even announce theirs on the sleeve!!)

I wonder what percentage of the 'White Ladder' owning populace know of the track's existence? 1% or less I'd guess.

So what is the 13th track on my Hives album that I can't play on the PC or even see on my CDX?

Shayman

I found it too, so you are not the last person in the world to know about it!
How did you find it by the way?
Should we be winding back on other cd's!

I found it whilst recording Please Forgive Me to a compilation tape for the car. The CD track started before the leader tape finished etc etc

As for should we be doing this to more CDs... maybe I suppose. Anyone know of any other such tracks on other albums? Maybe others on David's record label might be a good starting point.

On a Naim or Sony player.

It's a USA copy.

Does that make a difference?

It's on my UK pressing, but not on my US pressing. BTW, the UK pressing has MUCH better sound quality. The US pressing is very grainy, with a harsh "fizz" in the background. Props to Chris Koster for urging me to buy UK pressings, when possible. Similar results with DCD "Into the Labyrinth", Jeff Buckley "Grace", and Radiohead "OK Computer". I don't buy US pressings anymore, when I can avoid it.

Interesting.

I try to get my discs from the U.S. or Canada as I reckon (along with several other audiophiles) that they sound better than the E.U produced equivalent.

We've even found this to be the case with British artists discs.

I originally had a UK 'White Ladder' and reckon the USA one sounds better!

Bear in mind also that the first run of the album did not contain 'Nightblindness' which was on later production runs.
