If anyone out their with some pics of the Walnut finish SBL; could you please post some...I'm a little vague as to what constitutes Walnut versus Cherry.
What finish are the SBL's depicted on the front page of the web site.

I presume that LP12 finishes other than Afrormosia are veneered?

In which case which plinth sounds best? I suggest it's likely the original and owners of smooth sided fancy colours are sacrificing performance for some twisted aesthetic.

No, they are all solid wood plinths. Including my walnut one.

The difficulty with comparing walnut with teak is "which walnut/teak" are you referring to? There are differences from country to country (I believe English walnut is darker than Italian walnut). Burr walnut is absolutely gorgeous. The teak in my previous Kan IIs is more "orangey" than the walnut in my LP12.

What would be interesting would be if Naim can be commissioned to do a burr walnut finish, and at what kind of premium.

Having said that, the walnut on the SBLs (and other loudspeakers for that matter) is absolutely gorgeous. Probably the best walnut finish I have seen.

Given that the LP12 plinth must affect the sound, one wonders whether the wood is significant...

I always liked the fluting, and would never spend more money simply on a finish, so both my LP12s are (presumably) Afrormosia.

I don't pretend to be an expert on the subject but all of the Walnut pairs I remember seeing around the Naim factory and all the pairs I've seen in dealers have been very unlike cherry.

I find it looks almost like maple (birdseye?) with that colour tweaking ... (not saying it is!).

Oh for gods sake, didn't I see on the old naim site they had some jpgs of finishes avilable, can't we all link to that and settle this.

Proof if ever it were needed that A. The camera can lie. B. Digital cameras are crap C. computers and humans will never agree on colour and D. cherry is nicer.

Good point, Paul - I wonder if the non-fluted plinths sound any better.

Mine's an old afro plinth - and I am shortly to be faced with either re-finishing the afro plinth to Black (I always did like black fluted plinths, rare as rocking-horse shit I know)... or obtain a standard black plinth. If I refinish the old one, I'll need to add the corner cheeks also.

Much as I love the grain and lustre of my Afro plinth, it simply will not work in the domestic aesthetic that is our lounge #8 (

Chaps

It is almost impossible to state what colour teak or cherry should look like, because colours vary naturally and also some woods darken with age.

I have a 100 oak table on my landing which is a lot darker than modern oak. Cherry really darkens with age whilst teak can actually fade.

If you like the look......buy it.

Oh god, this settles it - you're all colour blind, and the most you all know about wood colours/tints/finishes is what you see in a Cuprinol catalogue colour chart. Get on with listening to the music!
