lcd tv creating mains interference?

Posted by: JWM on 30 March 2009

In our tied accommodation, installing a HiFi separate spur is a non-starter, and so we have to have everything on the same mains ring.

Until now, this has not really been a problem. However, with our new lcd tv, when it is switched on it doesn't half make the Naim transformers hum!

Is there any electrical product I can use with the tv that will minimise this irritating hum without knackering the quality of the HiFi's sound?

A Maplin mainsblock for the telly has been suggested. I imagine that a Russ Andres Silencer is a no-no.

(For the most part, we don't listen to music with the tv on, but sometimes we do like to listen to music whilst looking at ceefax, or the kids are playing a game, or with a dvd).

Doe anyone know if this a common problem?
We are going to change our tv from a crt to a lcd & would be rather put out if this made the amp hum.

Interestingly, the problem has improved this week since son connected up his XBox360 to the said telly rather than his bedroom...!

However, Signals Andy has said he's had some success with a Maplin's mainsblock, and will bring one up to have a go with when the 250 comes back from its 'Salisbury holiday'.

Otherwise, thanks for Isotek tip, Stu. I'd rather not spend too much, as it's looking like I'm going to have to buy a Stressless sofa for my back, and they are f*cking expensive (and yes, I am permitted to say that in this instance Big Grin).

James,

I had a similar problem with my first LCD TV. This was powered from a mains adapter. My current TV takes a standard power lead and there is no problem. May I suggest that before forking out for a mains block you try to borrow something like a Copperline Alpha mains lead, which costs around £35. This may help/cure your problem and you will get improved picture and sound as abonus. It may also be worth experimenting with plugging the TV or the Naim gear into a different socket, if this is possible. Also, if you feel confident doing so, check that the earth wires are connected properly to the back of sockets in question.
