What's my naim?

Systems & History

Nait 2. Bought 2nd hand (in 1991) off a chap that said he helped design the tuner head for the Nat 01. The Nait wasn’t a commercial model, more of a semi-finished product that hadn’t made it to the end of the production line, was supposedly given as a gift. Dodgy deal? No, the guy was genuine, meet him during flying training in the RAF. AB, are you out there? Anyway, coupled with an Arcam Alpha, and at the noisy end, Kef C15’s which also had something to do with his dealings with Naim.

Problem

It’s not working. I think the CD player is at fault.

Solution

As sad as I am to see the Arcam give up the ghost, it leaves me no option but to purchase my lifetime system.

Further Problem

I live in North West Saudi Arabia and therefore auditioning and purchasing is a huge problem.

Request

With financial constraints of approximately 10k pounds, and the inability to audition, I am calling upon the experience found here to offer guidance in choosing my Naim. Luckily there is a Naim dealer 1000 miles away on the other side of the country that will deliver.

Initial Thoughts

All new: CDX2 - 282 - Hicap - 250, run into my Kef C15’s until I can get second hand SBL’s or new Allae.

Conclusion

Always loved the Nait and will set it up for my children (when they are through smashing things to bits). So I have always dreamt of having that Nait style sound but better (ie, a full on Naim system). However, the reason why I have stuck with my initial Nait system is that I wanted to get enough cash together to purchase my end system without following the upgrade path. So this is going to be my final system. I would only consider the addition of an XPS2 / Fraim.

Open to the floor!

Temptation

This said dealer does have a second hand set of DBL’s! Could I incorporate these bad boys driven by the 250 or would I need to go for 2 x 145’s?

Sonic.

I have almost exactly what you have listed minus the speakers. Mine are totem mani-2's

I started with a decent Sony CD player (XA333ES) and a 112/HiCap/150 and gradually replaced parts to get to the CDX2/282/HiCap/250 mkii. What follows is my opinon, which is mine only and of course is no substitute for an audition, when possible, so here goes.

The CDX2 was a revelation after the Sony, delivering clarity and detail against a velevt black background.

The 282 driven by one HiCap was a lot more than the 112, as it should be. It really sounds like it is pulling every bit of the music out of the CDX2 and passing it on. There is a vitality to the sound which comes through in the little nuances. The cymbal tings are all there as is the expression of the mid range coupled with a deep bass delivery.

The 250 mkii is the "engine" and IMHO it is a powerfull one. It portrays all the dynamics in the signal with command and gives a sense of power. There is no onset of "hardness" even at loud listening levels, you have to drive well beyond that to hear any "clipping". This is particularly in evidence in the convincing way strong musical bass is delivered. If you can get speakers with the really low frequency perfromance the 250 will drive them all the way down.

There I have waxed somewhat lyrical. Of course this is not the "full up" version of the system. that would include an XPS2 and a Supercap. I am saving towards those now, but as described it is a nicely balanced system IMHO.

BTW My music ranges across from modernjazz, thru' west coast light jazz, acoustic guitar and mainstream rock to very light classical.

Hope this helps.

I am sure you will get some more input

Welcome

Go and see Thomas Vasry at Mate HiFi In Riyadh. He is in the Shola Centre on Airport Road.

He should have a few things he can demo and often has some second hand stuff.

He is very knowledgeable and a nice guy.

Boom Boy,

The CDX2/282/HiCap/250 tots up to about 7/8k of your 10k budget. This does leave a little to spend on speakers or other juicy bits. The new 250 will drive DBLs no problem, they are not that hard to drive. However, they are ruthlessly revealing and will show up what is going on earlier in the system. Buy them by all means they are fantastic, I have a pair myself, but they would really benefit from a CDS3 and a 252. If you ever see yourself owning these then the DBLs are a sound buy.
If not, a 2nd hand pair of SBLs seem to be the bargain of the year at the moment. They tend to go anywhere from £600 to £1000 and would leave some money for an XPS2 and maybe a Supercap for your pre amp.

Boom Boy,

There is a Naim dealer in the main shopping suk in Al Khobar. Didn't have the opportunity to drop in there when I was doing contract work in Dammam, but you cann't miss it. Must be the biggest Naim sign for a shop that I have seen. Unfortunately they are in the north-east of the country.

Cheers,

Yusuf, at the MATE HIFI in the Gulf Center, Khobar is also very helpful and very good. He is currently on vacation, but expected back in a couple of weeks.

Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Are you really for real mate Big Grin
'I THINK my cd player is broke so i'll get a new £10,000 system' Big Grin Sorry but you have got me in creases here. Jeez I need to move over to saudi and work there - money must be finally growing on trees Big Grin

Really now, if you wanna get a new 10,00 system get one by all means, but to rationalise it by saying that you THINK your cd player is not working on your existing sytem your only kidding yourself mate - path that will ultimately lead you to disappointment.

Are there no other CD players (even a portable) to check your system out?? Or even mail order in another one.

Well whatever Smile
