Dubstep

Not sure if any of you particularly care about the current Dubstep counter-movement. ???

But thought you might enjoy this complete bootleg (which I can deal with in this case!) remix of William Fitzsimmons by a well known remixer.

I enjoy the What Are You Listening To? thread, and have found some music I love from there, after trawling through pages and pages of Genesis/Pink Floyd, and happily leaving people to it.
Yes my mind is closed to music I don't like - I concentrate on the music I do like - I see music as entertainment rather than education - my collection is not full of Genesis records BTW - they are too PC for me, but as the great late Fluf would have said more ELP, Clash, Purple, Fairport, ELO, Atomic Rooster, Half Man Half Biscuit and especially Basia Bulat.

I'm trapped in the 60 and 70s I'm afraid with flurries into the 21st Centrury thanks to the folk revival (Karine Polwart, Kate Rusby, Rachel Unthank) and long term admiration for the works of the greatest male folkster of them all: Christy Moore.

However, as the this is a thread about Dubblestep and I'm off thread - I'll shut up and let those who love this kind of stuff rock on.

Got me bang to rights!
Do you download their Monday and Friday mixes? I've got some class stuff from there - including the XX mix which is half an hour of pure joy.

Even wierder - Kid Adrift. No record deal yet. Where post-dub step bedroom production and folk collide. You might like/hate it. Lemme know.

I saw an Everything Everything video somewhere this week - looked more than a little strange - the singer especially. As for Kid Adrift, tried his MySpace. Probably not for me, but hey, I tried (!)

Thanks for the pointer, I'll have to try their downloads sometime. I don't look that often, to be honest, but I saw they had The XX as their album of the year, and suitably enough for this thread, Burial's Untrue as their best of the decade. It's a good album, not sure if it's that good.

Simon, just seen this naimlabel Tweet from 14th January:

"Zach Braff (JD) was wearing a lovely William Fitzsimmons T Shirt on Scrubs on ABC on Tuesday night!"

Good one!
Posted on: 21 January 2010 by Simon Drake
thanks man!
if only the appearance of t shirts was royalty bearing! william is doing well in the US, but it has been challenging building the same rep here.

must agree on XX. one of fave albums of 2010. i hope they can sustain their creative success.

Public Enemy

One for the rap haters. Although I can't blame you for being put off as probably 95% of it is actually crap. This example isn't.

I love dubstep and occasionally go to Fabric where they have a dubstep night. They also have a drum and bass night which is just wild. Check out Fabric CD 37 Caspa and Rusko as a good compilation which gives a good flavour of the scene. Anything by Dub Police is pretty good also.

Dev -- currently listening to Dub Police thru CDX2.2, DAC, XPS2, 552, 300 and IBL's.....loads of bass. lol!

Does dubstep have anything to do with dub reggae?

Steve,

Yes its a blend of what is called half step beats, basically slowed down UK Garage, with dub basslines and skittering drums. It can have a dark ethereal feel as in Burial and Shackleton but just flick to page 1 of this thread and look for my post and samples.

to anyone who is interested, i've reached out and commissioned NumberNin6 to do a pro (not bootleg) remix of the William Fitzsimmons track. Could be interesting! Listening to some of his other stuff, he's very talented! Think he'll make a name for himself in 2010! Check out the streams on youtube. Smile

What a cool thing to do - I love the interactivity of Naim/the forum, and the open-ness to new sounds. Definitely a producer I will now be checking - and newfound respect to the artist and label for this kind of creativity.

Thanks, i like. New music at the moment is exploding with new releases.
I look foward to a good year of new music releases.

Funny, i always find the best music is produced during hard economic times. A breath of fresh air from the over & over tried & trusted and repetitive old school.

I can only listen to Pink floyd and what not so many times then it's time to move on.

regards, steve
(me like the drum & bass scene of today & onwards)

stu,
feel free to mail links to info@naimlabel.com
things rarely work that way, but we get a lot and try to listen to all of them.
normally bands get some constructive feedback. when there is genuinely nothing nice to say...you tend not to hear from us. i guess now you know that, I don't have choice but to hit you back Winker

I played FOABP non stop over the summer of 1991. Such energy. The songs still give me goosebumps. It was good to be a young middle class white Australian male fighting the power Big Grin

More recent rap/hiphop does not interest me much but this and Beasty Boys Paul's Boutique are pure gold.

After reading this thread, I will give Dubstep a chance.

being an 80s child Public Enemy was actually one of my earliest memories. absolutely love em. Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul for the less hardcore mood.

There is really great modern afro centric rap music out there still. Some lyrics with meaning. But is unfortunately not in the mainstream anymore. You have to go out and find it!

It is hard not to like Jurassic 5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeN9c2GYJkk

Common http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mnKNr2Tiq8

Nas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL4zz-Rey_Y

Nas is working on an album with Damian Marley (Bob's son!), I am really really looking forward to that. Here is a taster for those who care...

Dubstep constitutes a large proportion of my music purchases over the last 2 or 3 years. However, I can't really see any dubstep in the original link - doesn't really do it for me.

The best place for advice about the genre is the Dustep Forum, particularly useful is the list of cd albums here.

My faves are:
Kode 9 and the Spaceape : Memories of the Future (the track Portal is on the album)
2562: Aerial
both Burial albums

Possibly the best introduction is the v/a compilation 5: Five Years of Hyperdub - stand out track for me is Purple Smoke by Black Chow

I would also highly recommend the recently released King Midas Sound album, Waiting For You (like the Kode9/Spaceape album & the Black Chow track this is song-based rather than instrumental, and is rather chilled)

The connection with dub isn't immediately obvious but is there in the atmospherics and the bass. Kode9's MySpace has a track featuring Lee Perry.

Lee,

I also like that Kode 9 & Spaceape, its so unique. Also thanks I've been waiting for King Midas Sound to release an album after hearing Surround Me on the Box Of Dub Comp.
