Any more Naim DAC reviews?

Posted by: Wazza69 on 22 January 2010

Hi,

Seems pretty quiet here DAC wise considering the anticipation! (which has now moved to a streamer)

Anyone just got one and have any further thoughts or perhaps the views of those who have had it for a few weeks and have got to know it?

I am particularly interested in views versus a Lavry from a Sonos or Mac but also generally. Also interested in the voicing versus other Naim sources

The problem seems to be that there are not too many out there yet. You can get a demo at a dealer, but most of those in the wild are ones where dealers have sold their demo units on AFAIK.
Still waiting for mine.....

only naim unit ive got is the dac had it since 12 december . the most surprising thing about it ,is the optical inputs are very good. ive tried expensive one to compare, and i settled for a true colours one at £32.

not interested in the ipod input, i think its a waste of time.

coaxial input from a transport are stunningly good right across the bandwidth. run it constantly over two days and since then it is top drawer

sonos/ripnas/nas sounds extremely close to original via bnc

instructions given are not very good . eg floating switch.

its a great dac buy it.

I will be posting a review when my modified CDX2 and DAC arrive in the hopefully not too distant future.

I will also post a review once I have something to review.

I have a CDX2.2 (used as a transport) DAC and XPS2 and have posted recently (a bit too enthusiastically probably). In my view its the best source I've owned, and I have or have had Naimed LP12, NAT01, CDS3, CDS2, CDS1 and CDI.

cheers

So these DACs are being used as two box CDPs. Big Grin

What other DACs did you compare them with? Or was it just the CDPs.

Thanks. I think there are much better DACs than those to compare it with. To be fair, some of those you mention are not aimed at the two grand level either.

just making the point that my dac road as been long , and yes 2k is alot of dosh for me. i listen to some over the top priced units over the last year over 2k .but listen 3 times to the naim , and it was evident that it was a special.

i havent got any naim stuff and probably would never purchase any. i think it is pricey and designed to get us in the upgrade etc. £500 for a main cable, £3000 for a psu for the dac .

the dac is extremely natural and im delighted with it,

guess i was lucky to own the dac, when naim guys havent heard it yet

quality of the audio is top drawer.which is the most important thing for me.

there are a few cons.

no remote for a £2000 unit . i havent got a naim preamp'

ipod connection for myself is a waste of time.

two usb inputs will not be used.

4 75 ohm 4 optical rather had more 75ohm outputs

upgrade cost of psu too expensive £3000 ugg

Can't wait to hear what Harry K has to say, I have an older CDX2 with XPS2 and I am also interested in converting my current CDX2 into a transport and getting the DAC. I consider this easier to do then spending money on a new CDX2.2 which I have read some are doing, seems like a waste to me. I have not come across anyone who has that yet though.

The plan in this house was to go CDS3. The HDX has queered that pitch, maybe not on absolute sound quality but certainly in terms of what’s going to be a long term sensible balance in the real world (or at least my real world). So impressed were we with the CDX2-2 plus DAC, we decided to take a gamble. An HDX may (or may not) join or replace the front end at some point. At the time Naim were unsure if the retro mod was viable but that’s been addressed now. So I’ve rebuilt the rack, cleaned all the connections and am now waiting. I’ve been a CDX2/XPS2 cheerleader for years. I paid a grand for a Marantz CDA94 twenty five years ago, so twice that in 2010 for something with the sonic performance of the Naim DAC (according to my ears) strikes me as particularly good VFM. There is risk involved. For obvious reasons I haven’t been able to do a proper audition. But I do have an XPS2 to go with it and (because I’ve lost the original CDX2 power cable) a Powerline.

I'll have plenty to say when there's more than fresh air in the rack.
