all

not been on for a while changed job and the computer got virus.
I bought before christmas a 46" LCD tv it came with a free blu ray player.
So i plugged it in and bought a few titles i wasnt expecting much improvement over the dvd5 i set it up to 1080p and 24pfs and plugged in superman returns then one of the pirates films.

What a shock the machine wipes the floor picture wise against the dvd 5 have not connected it to av2 yet so with sound i can,t say. It also up scales to 1080p standard dvd. so far am not sure with this sometimes it looks stunning other times it looks poor, i have noticed this with scaled pictures.

I read the recent post on hd here and it got me think and only naim can answer this if an av3 or av2 hd is to be on the way can i suggest it has hdmi video switching and six channel inputs for sound. Arcam,Krell,Denon,Lexicon are all now offering products with these, my av2 is getting on a bit so naim get the finger out

Neill,

From what I've seen, on Full HD material, most BluRay machines appear to be very good. However, with DVD they seem to be let down both in picture but especially in sound, even though they're only used as transports for decoding in the AV2. So check out the difference in sound between the DVD5 and your BD box.

I'd also very much like to know specifically:

How the DVD5 compares to your BR player with standard definition DVD material in terms of image quality? (Are you connecting DVD5 to your display with DVI to HDMI or component?)

How DVD5 sound quality compares to your BR player with standard definition DVD material (assuming that you are running both via coaxial digital route into AV2).

Thanks!

Neil,

Same questions as Billy, but based on the use of whichever form of connection gives the best picture and best sound.

Perhaps Naim could introduce a "charging" system on the forum where they charge people like me for asking questions of people like you; and pay people like you for taking the time and trouble to test your brand new equipment and tell the rest of us what you find.......

many thanks and

Cheers

display was a sony 500 seris plasma 720p max new display is sony 46 3500 lcd. dvd5 was connected via hdmi to both as is the sony blu ray player i have yet to oreder a six channel cable to din and play about with sound via av2 thats the next step

I can only at the mo compare picture and as per post blue ray is 1080p 24pfs. The picture wipes the floor with the dvd 5.

you cant compare it its like compairing apples and oranges.
With sd picture just edges it to the sony machine this is an upsampled picture. I would urge you all to remember this machine can be bought of play for £299.

I would urge Naim to replace the av2 with a more upto date machine but stay away from the source side for the next few years.

Thanks for the info.

If I understand your post, you have yet to take the 5.1 channel analog audio output from the Sony BR player to the VIPS input of the AV2.

But can you tell us how the audio quality compares (on standard definition material)between the DVD5 and the Sony BR player when connected via coaxial digital to the AV2?

The reason I ask is that I have a Pioneer Elite BR player connected via coaxial digital to an AV2 and via HDMI to a Sony 1080p projector. I am wondering whether or not a DVD5(second hand machine I've been offered)will bring any video or audio benefits (on SD material) over the Pioneer BR player. Your experience would be helpful.
