Fraim with 9 units ??

Posted by: Red Kite on 06 April 2003

Hi,

I am considering a fraim but would need one to support 9 units. The leaflets suggest 6 is the maximum.Has anyone achieved this or used another stand ?
I use two ercol cupboards at the moment and could not fit two fraims in the space.

6 levels is indeed the recommended maximum.

With a system of this calibre, you need two stacks anyway to separate the 'pre' and the bits of kit with transformers.

Isolating them fom each other in separate stacks is very worthwhile, and the benefits clearly audible.

The kit looks fantastic on Fraim as well. Get it on show!

Tom,

The AV unit might be good . I have looked on the Naim site and have latest brochures but have not seen it. Can you point me in the right direction.

Stop messing around with srands and upgrade from a K9 - IMO that would be a big improvement, especially with your amplification.

Gerry,

the PDF version of the manual seems to suggest a maximum of base + six levels (i.e. seven).

The system you quote seems to need eight levels CDS2/XPS, 52/SC, 2x135, NAT01/PST. Maybe you could stack the NAT01 on top of the CDS2 head unit?

Maximum load on a Fraim assembly is 90Kg. I reckon your eight boxes will come to somewhere around 80Kg, and one additional level of Fraim would add another 7Kg. That's right on the edge, or maybe slightly over it.

Also, J.N. is right about the benefits of a dual stack. He was running a 2xfour-tier rig, with a SuperCap under his SNAXO.

We moved the s/c away from the SNAXO (just stacked two boxes on the top of the other rig), and the sound cleaned up by a large amount. It was noticeably better again once we re-balanced the stacks as a three-tier for un-powered items and a five-way for the powered stuff.

It's also worth pointing out that a three-tier stack with tall legs is the same height as a five-tier with short legs, if you're worried about that sort of thing.

I think you should skip the Trampolin unless you heard it and liked it very much. I had one underneath my player and I think it sucks (the life out of the music).

Have fun!

The Hutter looks great.

Have you tried moving the Linn away from the rest of the kit?

Martin Payne and I have noticed that having an LP12 in the vicinity of the rest of the Naim kit has a deleterious effect on the sound.

Nothing to do with it being connected - we think it's the 'ferrous f**k up' effect, caused by the steel sub-chassis.

Try moving it and tell us what you think.

A friend had an unconnected 'tin wrap' NAD tuner on a Fraim shelf below his 82. Getting it out was nothing short of astonishing. Four people were there and ALL JAWS DROPPED.

May the madness continue!
