What's happening with the forum?
Posted by: Flame on 15 July 2010
Hi guys;
I know this section of the forum is more quiet and mostly visited by the more seasoned forum members. For that reason I ask, what is happening lately to the forum? I have noticed a recent increase in hostility in several threads. Regardless of whether there was a trigger to such violent mood or not, it is sad to observe this on the forum.
One of the best features about the Naim forum is the laid back, friendly and mature nature of the members. I hope we don't loose that.

Hi.
This topic seems to appear from time to time yet those raising it rarely specify any cause for concern, only a general unhappiness.
It's difficult to discuss much further without an example or two or naming the thread and poster.
Paul.

Flame, are you needing a hug today?
I have seen anything "violent"; maybe robust comments but at the end of the day it's all pretty harmless.
This being a one dimensional envirmonent, comments can be take out of context.

I think relatively speaking this is an extremely genteel place. The general standard of person and post is the highest I've come across. Sure there are the odd flashes of temper (I've even had the odd hundred lines from Adam).
If you find it hostile here I'd suggest you be very careful where else you visit.

Hi Paul, take a look at the recent threads in the hifi forum (i.e. 202 or 200) and it will be clear.

I agree with you Tom. This does seem to be a very mature and white hearted forum. I do take an occasional browse over some other hifi forums and I know what you mean. Makes me laugh every time a 16 year old want to "blast the volume on his Harmon Kardon and Sony speakers cause the bass is like an earthquake!"

There is a decent amount of accuracy in the OP.
I don't post as much as I used to on this Forum, but I have noted some very thin skins creeping in - happy enough to have a dig at people, and sulking like schoolgirls when either its pointed out, or people reply in kind.
I always think you should post in the manner that you'd speak to somebody face to face, which I always do.

I've noticed this as well recently, though I would call it cant rather than thin skin.
On the whole though, I think the Forum has improved quite a lot lately compared with three of four months ago. Though like Mike I feel less desire to post these days (which I guess some may be thankful for...)

Chaps
I once was on this forum several times a day for several years, now I may just lurk once a week.
The reason I stay away is that we have been taken over by a couple of intellectually challenged plonkers whose main topic is "how deep is the snow" and "oh dear, some old pop singer has just died, how sad". Usually just one liners that would insult the intellect of a twelve year old.
You can only take so much of that drivel before you just give up and stay away.
The Naim forum was once the king of hifi fora and unfortunately it has attracted people who just come on for the sake of it, spouting rubbish.
It is pointless banning them and them allowing back a few weeks later. Get shot of them and keep them out and things will recover.
Naim is the best hifi company in the world and the people who use it deserve more than having a once great forum polluted by this mob.
The fact is simple, this forum once thrived, now it is struggling since this lot have taken over with their inane twaddle.
Regards
Mick

Can't help but agree with Mick and Mike to some extent.
I now fall into the occasional poster category.
One thought is that the forums reflect the changing attitudes and behaviour of society in microcosm. There is a lot more mud slinging and need to assign blame for everything nowadays. The media have become vultures feeding off private distress and taking a holier than thou stance in a hypocritical fashion.
Another thought is that for a long time Naim was still a strongly specific supplier of high end stereo HiFi only. This focussed discussion and reduced the repetitive 'how long should NACA5 be' or 'should I be worried by the hiss I can hear when I put my ear against my speakers' questions partly because there was an awfull lot less posts to search thru' for an answer and the search function thereforer worked easily.
As Naim has moved into a more diverese product range and broader spread pf pricing the audience on the forum has expanded in many ways. I am sure the age range involved now is much wider as well as the backgrounds from which posters come. This has no doubt been good in some ways but in others has increased the obvious differences in expression of views across such a wider group.
Finally folk are more abrasive generally nowadays as a protective mechanism to the frustrations of modern everyday life which can feed thru'in their posting styles.
Ah for the good old 'bad old'days

Some people just look for a fight...
It's a much quieter, probably duller place than it used to be. I rarely venture into the Hi-Fi Corner these days or the Cell to be honest but keep an eye on the Music Room (and occaisionally post!)
I joined the forum during the 'Stand Wars' period, look back in the depths of the hi-fi corner if you want some real Flame wars (in a mana of speaking).

I would in fact prefer a little more cut'n'thrust.
Keeps the blood flowing don't you know.
Disagreements, expressed amusingly or vigourously do help keep the cobwebs at bay.
Though vitriol for the sake of it might be best kept for the less 'civilised' fora. Or is it forums? Or forumi?

King of the pot calling kettle pops in uses his only word and pops out again.
I guess he was a seagull manager in the past.
You people must not post on his forum without clearing with him first.
Perhaps a thread on pen nibs or amusing use of the letter A would be better?
Rather than posts that some others might find informative/useful, or information others may have missed.
Don't hurry back.

I do agree with almost everything that has been said so far. I find myself posting more in the "nice photos" thread than in the hi-fi section. I hope that this is only a phase that the forum is going through and a new balance will be reached in the near future.

You can say what you like, that is your perogative. Your personal problem is that whilst in real life you may be an ok type of guy, on this forum you come across as a bit dim and you never raise the bar to a decent level.
I have been effectively gone from this forum for nearly 5 years with only an occasional appearance, so you cannot blame its demise on me. You and Munch have been filling the forum up with absolute crap over the last few years and the results are there for all to see.

Mick

Hence the massive amounts of complaints I get, NOT.
BTW I'm not complaining about the so called demise of the forum, if indeed there is a demise.
True many members have stopped posting, many have joined too, off the top my head over 2500 this year. Admittedly they don't all post.
With people like you insulting them when /if they do it's hardly surprising, is it?
Any idea when the last time I posted an obit?
Now back in your box, there's a good boy.

That dumbed down response is the reason why I now stay away from here. You have totally buggered it up with crap and witless wit.
Still it is nice to see you have overcome your obituary fetish, so there is still some hope for you.
Enjoy your time here, it appears a lot less people do now than of before.

I agree Flame, we have a few names who seem to get their kicks out of being confrontational, some just seem to follow each other around the forum & look for a snipping opportunity, others just rabbit on-&-on about their own pet subject that we have all heard before, others just keep banging on & repeating the same stuff not knowing when to quit & finally someone gets mad about something/someone & fires a broadside (me culpa)
But IMO its all good fun to just watch & LOL, it is a good study on the infinite variations of human nature.
The only downside is some individual - maybe a newbe - sends in a real question seeking advise & his/her post degenerates into a kindergarten level handbags at dawn spat. This just brings the forum decorum down to twitter/facebook standards.
But like I said, its all good fun, but maybe a little less testosterone might help.

You do seem to be obsessed with Mick; can I suggest you use the "ignore" function?
It stops me seeing useless, antagonistic comments from various small-minded sulkers and I have no doubt it would be of use to you too.

Mike-B;
Your attitude towards all of this is very reasonable. The mess taking place won't hurt me. It can be entertaining if it occurs every once and a while. The real problem is when the truly experienced people (i.e. Frank Abela, Peter cymbiosis or Polar Bear) start to fear posting in order to avoid aggression and ridicule from the forum bullies. That will be the true loss...
