What's happening with the forum?
Posted by: Flame on 15 July 2010
Hi guys;
I know this section of the forum is more quiet and mostly visited by the more seasoned forum members. For that reason I ask, what is happening lately to the forum? I have noticed a recent increase in hostility in several threads. Regardless of whether there was a trigger to such violent mood or not, it is sad to observe this on the forum.
One of the best features about the Naim forum is the laid back, friendly and mature nature of the members. I hope we don't loose that.

Well, i think it's threads like these that dum the forum down.
If you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen.
Contribute something positive yourselves and uplift the forum then rather than worrying about others or living in the past. Do something, instead of moaning.
This is not at anyone, just my IMHO.

I think the Forum is far less confrontational and aggressive than it use to be a few years ago.

The natural dynamic of any conversation is that eventually it winds itself down and comes to a conclusion, not necessarily a resolution, but an end at any rate.
You can just run out of things to say.
And in music, you can quickly run out of things to say that are safe to say on any forum, which are more like carnivals than anything.
Fresh blood is needed to keep things rolling along, not the same old voices.

I'd disagree.
I raised a very similar thread a year or two ago. The dumbing down comes, IME, from those who are intolerant of others and as I mentioned earlier, see no problem with having snide little digs but squeel when somebody has a go back. Nothing wrong in pointing this out, I feel. I was bemused when some clown "apologised" on my behalf for something they thought I'd said, when they'd either not read the thread, or simply not been able to understand my PoV.
I remained concerned about the intolerant polemic recently shown towards people who are Religious. Most people would ( rightly ) be shocked at posts that where intolerant towards the gay community, or towards non-whites; why is it acceptable to be anti-Religion / the Religious?

A little empathy for others goes a long way. Of course, it's easier when it's not angry, vindictive or both.

One problem is that some people think that what they say and how they say it is always right.

I've had my problems and criticisms of Mick Parry in the past but I fully admit on this occasion I am totally with him.
Some of the drivel that comes from the 22000+ posters (how arrogant or self opinionated - or total looser - you decide) really weakens the effectiveness of this forum.
I get the impression, particularly on never ending topics like religion/bloody burka wearing etc) that it's all about who can massdebate their opinion the strongest.
Yes, there you go, this forum is being spoiled by a few, selfish massdebators.
At the risk of being a massdebator myself, I am sure you all want to know my opinion on Burka wearing?
Ban them tomorrow. I live in England and don't want Pakistani or any other culture rammed dawn my neck.
In respect of this outrageous comment, when I am in any Muslim country, I wont drink alcohol as I walk down the street - or even eat a damn Mars Bar when it's their Ramadan.
Just want behaviour received in my country that I offer in others, OK?
If you disagree with this, sorry, you're wrong.

It was intolerant racist drivel like this diatribe that caused me to quit several other internet forums.

Here is a good example of being both oblique and snide, to no apparent purpose other than being unpleasant. Not the best lubricant for conversation, but that only matters if conversation is your motive.

You disagree?
Of course you do Mike, you have to.
Having made my contribution, I'm now off!
To soar through the pink sky on my gold speckled mighty Unicorn to never-never land in search of 144 burqa clad virgins to jolly roger! HIHO!
In the name of some god.
Or other.
Who I really can't be arsed to invent as the wind is in my face from my trusty Unicorn's majestically flapping wings. Oh yes!!
So just make up your own.
Or choose one (or more) of the countless number already imagined. That'll do.

Big plus one. And another too.
Obviously not including the humble bit.

Ah, the fruits of war.
You live in a multicultural country.
I live in such and feel every culture, every nationality brings something to the table to be shared and appreciated. Especially the food!
Prejudice is fear.Normally. I did not insist racism or being a bigot. Some individuals (for some reason) can't adjust their thinking. I find when there are others that do not think, reason,or have the same priorities as me? I am enriched for the experience.
Your country is far to cosmopolitan for such thoughts. I think.
Behavior is not defined by what a person wears.

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do" holds true and might be the most reasonable behavior to adopt. One must be considerate of the surroundings and social climate. Regardless of that, I expressed my unhappiness with attitudes and not topics of threads. A mild form of aggressiveness once in a while can be overlooked, but when excessive, it can be quite insulting. In general, the more moderate forum members are less likely to trigger some of the bullies, which is no surprise.
Kuma, you gotta keep posting to reach the quota (all in good fun)

A funny thing happened to me on the way to the forum .......

To all
My dad always said "if you're going to write a strongly opinionated letter, always delay posting it in the letter box and re-read it 24 hours later and you'll almost certainly change some of the text, and definitely reduce it's venom."
I reckon he was right, not just for letters but emails and forum posts.
To post "Don't agree with me and you're wrong?" Where was I coming from? Mind you, it got attention.
I wont insult you all by saying sorry but if I could very gently tread on a few eggshells here and go back to the OP topic, I do think there is a bit of a "club" here and if you're not in it, it seems you're verbally shown the door.
And please don't throw Racist at me either as, since I was a child I never for a second thought of Indians or Chinese as anyone other than myself, their skin/culture differences never entered my head. In fact I'd never even thought about it until I wrote this post.
They just integrated into British life, yes, keeping their strong beliefs but not imparting them on those of a different view.
But my comments regarding the Burkas stand, I'm afraid. Ban them.
Why am I wrong to want to be treated in my own country as I behave in other countries/cultures?

On more than one occasion, I have spent the better part of a lazy Sunday reading posts on the forum. The music room has redirected my listening to places I would never have discovered on my own. My stereo was upgraded based on advice I got here. The best of experiences.
At the moment, I am at cross ends. I am feeling a strong urge to write, but have nothing in particular to say, and am having trouble finding good things to read here on the forum. It feels like a dry spell.
Can't be over soon enough for me.
Last really good one was Florestan's thread on keys.

Bob
Your forum location says "Sunny Cheshire."
Could I politely suggest you spend next Saturday afternoon in Rochdale to gauge more clearly the point I am making.
By the way, while you are there, if you or your family need to go to the loo, no problem as long as you don't mind using the new "squat toilets" that Rochdale Council have kindly provided for what is now the majority faith.
Cheshire will be even sunnier when you get back to it, I promise - even if it's raining!
I wish some good 'ol British chaps and gals would stop burying their heads in the sand to what is happening in this country.....
And pleeeease, everyone, read my post again, I'm not anti anything that's not called Smith or Jones.
OK, off to watch golf and I am away next week so adios, think about what I say before you stick the knives in and bear in mind I'm just a normal, (higher) tax paying bloke wanting a simple, non confrontational happy life - I didn't ask for the opinions I've been forced to adopt....
I'm British and proud, if you have a problem with that then I respect it. I don't agree with it but I respect it.
Kind regards
Ian
