Dumb question: CD5 & PSU

Posted by: Simon Crosland on 04 April 2002

I was looking at the pictures in the manuals of how to add a PSU to a CD5 and all the pictures show the CD5 powered from the PSU, but the signal connection going from the CD5 direct to the pre-amp.

I had expected that the signal to the pre-amp would be taken from the output on the PSU? Otherwise the CD5 will have power from the PSU and power from the pre-amp simultaneously.

Confused ...

Simon,

IIRC it is only the Nait 5 and 112 that can power a Stageline, for example. The other preamps, as far as I know, do not have any capability to power any other device. The output of the CD5 will go to an input that does not have a 24v output.

That is correct.

It is when a PSU powers a pre-amp that the interconnect carries both power and signal.

cheers

Good stuff! So how big an upgrade did you find the CD player? I've forgotten what you were using before.

Ah, there in lies a story ... I bought the CD5 secondhand (its about 6months old) from a dealer (not a Naim dealer though). When it arrived yesterday, it came without interconnect or puck due to a packing mistake. And now the relevant people are on holiday ... frown

So after a quick email to Naim, I called Infidelity late yesterday and they are getting me a new puck and interconnect since I'm not patient enough to wait for the originals to turn up.

Bummer! There is nothing worse than a new toy you can't play with...

Simon;

With the CD5 (and 3.5 before it), any additional PSU only powers the analogue output stages of the player. This effectively dedicates the built-in power supply to everything else inside the box. This is in contrast to the CDX/XPS situation where the XPS takes over complete power duties.

Thus in simple terms (disregarding the earthing), the SNAIC between the PSU and the CD5 only carries power. The interconnect between the CD5 and the pre only carries music.

Relax, though -- connecting a StageLine/HiCap to a non-Naim pre is even more confusing... works a treat though.

Best;

Mark
