I was wondering if anyone on the forum tried a floating circuit for their hi-fi gear?
If the floating earth and isolation of mains will be beneficial?

Kuma, you seem like a knowledgeable person, so why do you respond like a cretin?
There is no need to treat threads you do not like with remarks such as this one. Now I am uncertain if you really understand what a floating circuit is.

Mick,
Mains has been somewhat fried to death, but I don't recall reading much about 'floating circuits'....

I've got to be honest, I haven't got a bastard clue! Time for a spot of Googleing!

This sounds like a long way from when HMV recorded Elgar, in Hereford Cathedral in the first ever "live" world premiere recording, back in 1927. They tapped the 100v DC supply the cider makers, HP Bulmer suplied the town centre with, to power the recording head amps! There is rather a lot of of electrical noise, which is intermittent, in the old records, but they are still priceless!
The wiring in the house in which I was a child, was an intersting mess. No earth as such upstairs, but the cable was arranged with the positive in a central core, and the neutral was a lead outer casing. Downstairs was more conventianally modern! The mains was connected in 1961, whereas electricity was installed in the 1920s from a generating set across the fields, which supplied our house, the Rectory and one other house!
I bet it was grand. Amazing nothing burnt down really. The farmer on our place before the one we took over from died by tipping a tractor over in 1937! Happy days indeed.

Dear Jon!
Not yet. I was sure you would make it home, but...
Well we enjoyed a good pint of the Wye Valley brew! Three for me, so you would have enjoyed the atmosphere at least.
I don't have you email as I delete once a week, and thought I had saved your address, but I am slightly slap-dash sometimes. So if I don't reply, it is because some thing has gone awry with your email.
Just checked and nothing yet!
Steady on the bends Fred

OK Fred - I sent a mail to your hotmail account this morning - if you haven't got it within the next day or so I'll send another.
Glad you had a good time at the local hostalry - it's lucky I left when I did though - I'm afraid I did not make it home until well into the small hours!
Cheers,
Jon

...Is a "floating circuit" one that is not earthed?
If so I can report on that. In my house the living areas are wired with sockets that only have live & neutral, no earth. Apparently this was acceptable in Holland at that time. I ran my naim system in innocence of this fact for some time, then for a period fully aware, then I "upgraded" by installing a serious 12mm2 spur WITH earth.
Conclusion running without an earth did not blow anything up owing to the sensitive circuit breakers in the consumer unit BUT it did NOTHING GOOD to the sound, whereas on the earthed spur everything sounds a hellava a lot better.
Does that help?
regards
Geoff
