What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Jethro Tull, Nothing Is Easy: Live at the Isle of Wight; from the 1970 concert, arguably the greatest in-concert line-up of contemporary rock acts ever (Dylan, Moody Blues, ELP, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell etc.). Tull are captured during what is arguably their finest hour (Stand Up and Benefit were new; Aqualung was in the works). Their sound was very "organic" at this time, folky/bluesy/jazzy with a kind of Zeppelinesque fierceness; they hadn't succumbed to the "concept album" virus yet.
Great stuff.

Jam - Little Angels a time expired lost property item from work. An OK rock/soft rock outfit from Scarborough. The music seems a bit too polite for a rock band.

Bob Mould--Body of Song. New album is very good--it might be his second best solo effort (behind Workbook).
Nine Inch Nails--With Teeth. I like this quite a bit also--consistently good.
Woven Hand--Consider the Birds. I like this a lot also. Dark and dirge-like from the former front man for 16 Horsepower.

"Joy Division Oven Gloves" by HMHB
And I still can't my head around "Bob Wilson Anchorman".
Am I the only one on the forum who has a complete set of HMHB recordings? John Peel used to say they were the most requested group of all time on his show.

Cowboy Junkies - Early 21st century Blues. Transcendental
Posted on: 05 August 2005 by sjust
Are you saysing "Early 21st century Blues" has the balls to lead me out of my "Cowboy Junkies" Blues ? I have been a fan forever, and the Timmins corp has let me down more and more with every of the recent albums. Is that the turnaround ? Should I go for the limited 14.99 offer on jpc ?
Questions, questions...
Meanwhile:
Wayne Shorter Quartet - Beyond the sound Barrier: Only at the second song, now, but very promising, very promising. Thanks, Huw ! (Also: June Tabor - solala / Redman Quartet - Moodswing: Great / Biondini, Girotto - Terra Madre: Divine / Widor - Organ works: Hmpf / Corelli - Complete Works, not heard yet...)
cheers
Stefan
