What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Mark, in your profile it lists Grado 325i and Micro Utopia Be - is the balance of sound similar? I love the balance of the sound spectrum on my 325i, but comfort can be an issue. Have not heard a Be tweeter used by Focal and Usher - curious on your thoughts.

Hi Jeff,
Only recently started listening to Laura Veirs. Do you have the other albums and if so how do they compare?
As far as the headphones are concerned I'm afraid I can't really advise you there. Since I bought the Focals I have made some other major upgrades to my system, during which time I have not used the Grado's at all! Comfort is definitely an issue, especially for prolonged listening, which goes some way to explaining the lack of use. I might hook the Headline back up again when I go home next week, should be interesting to compare!

Mark, I have all the LV albums and saw her during the tour for Saltbreakers.
The two you have are my favorites and are a bit more pop/rock than her earlier stuff. The first two - Orphan Mae and Troubled By The Fire - are folk-based and more acoustic in style, both very good. The middle disc Carbon Glacier is the one that started garnering her attention, continuing the lyrical style but adding unexpected production touches, more electronics. It is a unique album.
She is now significant other with her producer/musician Tucker Martine who plays a large part in her sound, but the foundation of the songs are all hers. Tucker is a fascinating person, check lauraveirs dot com and the links will take you to some of his projects at Mount Analog and also to stuff from the other Saltbreakers band members. Tucker and Laura now call Portland home.

Thanks for the info Jeff.
I'll order the other albums. I'm sure I will particularly like the folky acoustic stuff.
I went on her website the other day - too late to notice the UK tour dates.

I hope she'll be here again soon.

Concertos for diverse instruments. Nicholas McGegan conducting the Philarmonia Baroque Orchestra on the RR (Reference Recordings) label which always provides us with a very good sound.

Good afternoon Ian!
Have you tried that old recording of the Haydn London Symphony yet!
When you do it will grip like a vice on your musical sensibilities!
I am listening to guess what? JS Bach would have got the prize! Just dug out the London Symphony from the Fischer Chamber Orchestra [under Edwin Fischer] myself! It is still amazing! It is amazing that this band can be so subtle, expressive, delicate and so muscular as suits the expression, whilst being a true chamber group, at a time in 1938 when this was a pioneering approach to Haydn's late symphonies ...
Have fun! G

Not had a slot to do it justice yet. Lots of shared listening recently (which is good) but that restricts the classical air-time if you know what I mean. Sunday am is usually nice time so hopefully I'll give it a listen tomorrow.
Went to a lovely recital with RNSO last Sunday, Mozart Piano Concerto (Nr22) coupled with Tchaikovsy Symph. nr 4.

Dear Ian,
I love Mozart No 22 in E Flat! Such a strange piece! Full of joy and yet so complicated! Not like the 20th in D Minor which is beam on! Or the 21st in C which is completely charming!!! "22 takes some holding together, but a great performance can do that, and then the effect is over-whelming!
You have that, I believe, from Edwin Fischer as well, if I remember correctly, on APR!
Tchaik Four appeals to me as well, but more in concert than on records. It seems to nead the spur of the live event to make sense to me!
