What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

That's the set from the mid-eighties, yes?
I have a few of those on LP; they are superb, absolutely breathtaking! Probably my all time favourite Mozart concertos, next to Brendel.
£40 you say? Amazon, here I come!

According to the booklet yes, 80s (with a few of the recordings running into the 90s). I've only listened to the first few discs so far but am very much enjoying them. It was £40 in Blackwells. They're well hidden on the amazon site (who seem to want slightly more for them, but here is the link):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000DZ6VAK/qid.../203-8548142-0179160
regards, Tam
p.s. If you like Brendel, you might want to look at his four discs of Mozart concertos with Mackerras and the SCO, if you don't already have them. Amazon are currently offering them for around £8 each. This disc of 12&17 is especially fine.

Thanks for that, think I'll give it a couple of months, it's bound to be reduced.
Let me know what you think of 23, K488.
I,m more than happy with Brendel's recordings of the concertos with Marriner and the AOSMITF, plus I'm not the biggest fan of Mackerras.

Omar Sosa / A New Life / Skip
A bunch of fancy chords, not much music in my mind.

At home:
Garbarek / Brahem / Hussain / MADAR / ECM

Goerge Benson: Pacific Fire
RDG recording. Which I always thought sounds less than pristine.

One for the Mediterranean-bound iPod
David Gilmour, On An Island
Quite a nice surprise: David seems to have left the ghosts of the recent Floyd history behind. Listening to this, it's easier to understand his disinterest in a massive Roger-inclusive PF reunion. In a way, it's kind of a return to the acoustic-based, pastoral sound of album tracks (think "Fat Old Sun" and "A Pillow of Winds") pre-Dark Side: languid musings about sunny holidays, family and love. Big Guitar Solo fans won't be disappointed, either; check out "Blue" for instance. Gorgeously recorded. And amazingly for such an un-trendy work, it's topping the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
It's nice to know the old verities still apply.

Dido and Aeneas, Kirtsen Flagstad with the Mermaid Singers and Orchestra under Geraint Jones
Really the Orchestra is the Philharmonia, but this does represent the marvelous production at Bernard Miles' Mermaid Theatre in St Johns Wood in September 1951, where Miss Flagstad received the handsome fee of a pint of stout for each of the twenty one perfomances! Different times, which perhaps were none the worse for a more relaxed atmosphere...
I do think that apart from her various records of Norwegian Melodie, Flagstad is not to be heard in such compelling form elsewhere. An amazing achievement.
I once played in King Arthur of Purcell, and it is hard to imagine how Handel would have developed without his English forebear. Lovely music.

Some great songs particularily "Dear Mary" a Teddy and Linda Thompson track. The playing on the tunes is of a very high standard.
