What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

The sound track of the film, "It's All Gone." The semi-true story of Frankie Wilde [mythical name, real story], a DJ in Ibiza who goes deaf and gets through in the end. Very sad film, but also very funny in parts, and in the end life enhancing!

Hiya Steve S1,
Rubber Soul is my favourite Beatles album!
But my CD version has been so over-compressed by EMI i can't enjoy it : (
What's your copy like?
regards ~
nymph
I've been listerning to BBC Radio 3 all day : )
Nymph,
It's the CDP 7 46440 2 - Made in Holland.
It sounds great (allowing for the exaggerated stereo of the period). But I wouldn't call it compressed.
But then I've heard people complain about Beatles CDs before and wondered why. They can be better (as Love showed) and hopefully now that Macca has finished with La Mills, they will be re-released.
But if you think these are compressed you should try Springsteen's latest, or many other modern releases. Horrible.
Steve
It's the same issue CDP 7 46440 2 and Made in Holland! This was the album the Beatles made when Paul played his bass while still in bed under the duvet cover and Ringo played his drums locked in the broom closet... i guess ; )
Compared to hearing this on vinyl, this cd is akin to washing your feet with your socks on!...
Steve, don't worry if it sounds great to you, i've just put on my nurses uniform and on my way around with the Bedini ear-syringing kit... you'll be okay!
(Although i'm afraid this won't help with the Bruce Springsprong ...that, sadly, is too far gone! : (
However, the Abbey Road album is in a completely different class, superb! : )

Just been moving my speakers further apart and testing out the new soundstage with this. Sounds even better and bigger.

This high quality modern day jazz piano trio. Worth checking out if you are into that kind of thing....

Yes, but comparing "Come Together" with the version on "Love" - still a way to go.

I'm sorry that Rubber Soul sounds that bad to you, I've got many modern recordings that are more compressed. A lack of bass weight and the stupid stereo effects of cramming most vocals down one channel are the most irritating things. I look forward to the "Love " mastered editions.
Even vinyl can't change the stereo though.

"Just a Little Lovin'" Shelby Lynne. Her tribute to Dusty Springfield, and very good it is too.

Ah Linda. Popular in places but I've never understood why she isn't huge. Such a voice and so versatile too. Sigh.

This Shelby Lynne album is fabulous. Minimalist instrumentation, very intimate vocals rather than belting them out a la Dusty. And an excellent recording. Shelby is in the room. I wish.

iPod on shuffle....compromised sound quality compensated for by interesting segueways! Lonnie Donnigan -> Siouxsie & The Banshees -> Sandie Shaw's 'Puppet On A String' sung in German! Sometimes I love listening this way.
