What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

I'm listening to Ryan Adam - gold

for today.

Can you guys recommend to me which classical album to look for. I'm looking for soothing kind of music/musical, like SENS-forbidden love, Taro Hakase, Hajime Mizoguchi,Tuck Andress.

I'm looking for minimal musical instruments like Cello & Piano or Piano with guitar.

Thanks

Today's purchase. As always, Rubalcaba stuns with his mastery.

Working my way through this Janacek collection as recommended by Tam (thanks) and it is superb value for money. I also have Simon Rattle's interpretation of the Cunning Little Vixen, but this performance sounds far more cohesive and engaging to me. It sounds like Sir Charles Mackerras's aim was to bring out exactly what Janacek is about from his performance, whereas as Rattle seems to want to stamp his personality on it. Also the recording is more fluent and natural. If I hadn't heard this then I'd be very content with Rattle's version, but as I have heard this - there is no going back.

I've also been listening to 'From the House of the Dead' on this same set, which I didn't know before and it is really expressive. There is something very appealling about Leos Janacek.

Frank Black (and the Catholics) Dog in the sand.

It's an utter travesty the way his solo work has been ignored. More raw talent than any of his contempories.

This album recorded straight to 2 track live, in about this week in 2000.

Rotf - Glad you're enjoying the Janacek. If you're anywhere near the area, Mackerras is doing Makropulos Case at ENO in May/June. Smile

Huw - Some great music in there isn't there (I may have to give them a listen later).

Currently listening to Uchida playing Schubert's D960 sonata.

Well after listening to a lot of Janacek, and then two They Might Be Giants albums - I decided to play this

Thoroughly recommended, as indeed are Janacek and They Might Be Giants.

This is the only album in my collection that starts with the line 'I know the Pope is too old to rock n roll'. It was another great loss when Kevin Coyne died some 15 months ago.

Handel Concero Grosso in B flat (opus 6, no. 7)

The happy counter part to the B Minor work from the same set, perhaps!

The sheer warmth of the opening slow section contain at least as much 'sunlight resting on closed eyelids' as the slow movement of the Emperor Concerto! Busch Chamber Players... Amazing...

Beethoven symphonies 1&3, Bernstein/VPO. Earlier it was Mahler 10 (unfinished), Sinopoli/Philharmonia and before that Schubert's D960 sonato with Kempff.
