What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

I have the sound track to "Master and Commander" playing - the key reason I bought it was to get hold of track 14. It's Boccherini's La Musica Notturna Delle Strade Di Madrid No. 6, Op. 30. As wonderful a piece of music as I have heard in a long time - and the rest of the album is growing on me too.

Ketil Bjornstad - Before the Light

Haunting & beautiful, apparently it is the intended soundtrack for a Taiwanese movie which never got made bacause they spent much of the money doing the soundtrack first Smile

And as I got my trusty dual 504 revved up for Dexy's Midnight Runners, thought I'd give a few of my old vinyl a run through.

This was my introduction to Bowie, 1979 and I was 13...........

Havent't got any Kevin Archer or Rowland in the collection any longer, used to have it on cassette, but not sure what became of it.

Mahler symphony no.8, Abbado/BPO (this is much better than I remember - I must dust the rest of this set off and have a good listen sometime).

It really is an amazing debut, there sure was something in the water back in 77-81, I don't really think that era has ever been equalled for such a diversity of great music (or it's an age thing)

all in all this lead me on to Ian Dury on gold vinyl from 1977

Sloop

I am just about to order the extended 2 CD of "New Boots and Panties". A moment in time lost on my wife who 5 years younger than me.

A great man hitting his stride at the right time.

Beethoven 5th 'Emperor' piano concert. Horowitz/Reiner/RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra. Not overly impressed so far, suffers from rather over-showy pianism on Horowitz's part, not a patch on the wonderfully majestic Solomon version.

A Caddy for Daddy by Hank Mobley. I haven't listened to it in years. Seeing one of his other albums in this thread made me dig it out.

Great listening.

Excellent new purchase found via pandora.com: oriental influenced piano , kinda jazzy, chillout music. Freebie DVD too if you get the right version.

Kenny Burrell,

Very reminiscent of Sketches Of Spain in some respects. V Good.

Kuma,

At the risk of barging in, this album is excellent, a student friend introduced me to it. It took a few listens to really appreciate it, but it really grows on you.

Hard to categorize as they do not sound quite like anyone else. Great driving drums and guitar sound, singer quite distinctive style, like he is singing through gritted teeth. Some tracks quite anthemic, supposed to be very good live. Saw a snatch of them on Live 8. Enjoy.

Schubert 9, Furtwanger/BPO from 1953, thankyou Fredrik most enjoyable. The first two movements were especially fine, I was less impressed by the second two, though (they seemed to lose something of the early energy).

Mozart horn concertos, Civil/Klemperer/Philharmonia. Thanks again Fredrik and Kevin. Didn't much take to it initially (listened to a few brief snatches a couple of weeks ago) but actually sitting and listening properly it has grown on me wonderfully. Totally different approach to the Orpheus disc, but lovely none the less and with some beautiful playing.
