What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Concerto in A minor for Violin, Strings, and Coninuo by JS Bach.

Adolf Busch, performing at New York Town Hall in 1943. Again this is enough to bring a tear to the eye, so profoundly pure and serious is the reading, and it is hard to ignore the circumstances either, of this poor man in exile in the US, whose people never understood him. He returned to the UK for the majority of his muscal activities in immediate post War times though by '43 he was already mortally ill.

My ggod mood of earlier in the week evaporated... Fredrik

I have now trcked down my own copy Of Blues For The Fisherman from vinyl records.

Excellent packaging, arrived in 7 days, with a spare lined sleve to replace the paper original. Good selection of new discs at what seem like reasonable prices.

Juergen's English is excellent so no problems on the language front. Found them after following a Gianluigi lead via Musicstack.

The A Minor Violin concerto of old Bach, again, and still in Adolf Busch's reading from 1943. Well it has just finished. On this shattering experience of listening to it twice, I think it only fair to share the fact that it is currently available om Pearl (Pavillion Records in Sussex) om catalogue number: GEMM CD 9298. Not the last word in HIP (with a piano as the continuo keyboard played by the composer, Lucas Foss), but so filled with humanity, and also completely without sentimentality, that it still is one the most lovely performances in all music that I know.

Groundhogs - Split (1971)

Someone's teenage vinyl played with a 6-inch nail, bought s/h for tuppence. Sounds magnificent (previous owner's Dansette stylus only knackered the surface of the groove) - so lots of music, with a bit of snap crackle and pop for atmosphere. Fantastic!

Currently at work Frown but very much enjoying Kempff's 50s mono cycle of Beethoven sonatas (enjoying the finale of no.6 as I type this).
