What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Geoff,
I saw the disc at the Virgin on Friday.
It was released last year.
It's been ages since I've picked up one of their CD as I have been listening to their 12" singles & remixes.
I was pretty disappointed with their last few releases, too.
But so far, I sort of like this one. It's *prettier* than groovy, tho.

Kuma, Thanks
I agree their stuff is variable but I usually find I like 50% of what's on any of their albums so a pretty good bet

Oscar Peterson - Night Train
Sloop,
Good choice. The classic Peterson Trio of Brown and Thigpen. Of the thirty or forty Oscar discs that I own this was my first, and still stands out as one of the least showy in terms of his fantastic technique.
Other favourites would be "In Russia" live double LP, "Tristeza on piano" and "Exclusively for my friends Oscar Peterson Vol 1 Action".
Saw him at the Barbican about 12 years ago and wept buckets, I was so taken by the music. Unfortunately his fantastic basist that night Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson died fairly recently. At the age of 17 he played with Count Basie and at 18 he played on the fantastic "One Flight Up" with Dexter Gordon.

I have the sound track to "Master and Commander" playing - the key reason I bought it was to get hold of track 14. It's Boccherini's La Musica Notturna Delle Strade Di Madrid No. 6, Op. 30. As wonderful a piece of music as I have heard in a long time -
Oi!
Sorry Dan,
all credit to you for playing it for me in the first place. Now I just can't get the piece out of my head.

Thanks for the recommendations Nic,
I only have a few more myself all of a high standard,
We Get Requests,
meets Lester Young
meets Ben Webster (wondeful, I love Webster's sax)
and the Harold Arlen songbook
I definitely prefer him with drums.

Nic / SJB.... That one is the first of a series of 6 LP's re-released on SACD / CD's as follows:quote:"Exclusively for my friends Oscar Peterson Vol 1 Action".
ACTION

GIRL TALK

THE WAY I PLAY

MY FAVORITE INSTRUMENT

MELLOW MOOD

TRAVELIN'ON

They were all recorded by Hans Georg Brunner in his own front room. I bought them all and find they are excellent as CD's on the CDS3. They are all also beautifull examples of Peterson improvising and building moods without any pressure to keep track length short in a way he does'nt seem to on any structured studio albums. Georgous and all worth having.
The icing on the cake is this one on LP which was also recorded there:"
THE LOST TAPES
A feast

Geoff,
Thanks for the info, looks like more investment required, I've got Action and Girls Talk on vinyl, so I know what you mean about the relaxed recording sessions.
Spotted a very good review in the Observer at the weekend for the reissue of Oscar Peterson Trio - At The London House triple CD from 1961 with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen.

I second the OP Exclusively for My Friends series on MPS as some of the greatest jazz piano, and superb jazz fidelity recordings, of all time. I wore out the LPs when they came out and am gratified they have been reissued on CD. I note they are available in Super Audio CDs too, though I do not have ability to play those. I love the London House recordings too, even if the sound is pretty poor....again, OP is given the chance to really stretch out and he has Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen in the rhythm section.
