What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

In spite of the fact that we all listen to different stuff, isn't it great that we are among the small percentage of the population that do. It knocks me out.

Dear Rasher. Yes. Fred.

We all spend large to ridiculous sums of money, which to an "outsider" is insane. What they don't "get" is the Return on Invesment. If I add up the number of hours of pleasure my music listening gives me per week it far outweighs any other pleasure.quote:In spite of the fact that we all listen to different stuff, isn't it great that we are among the small percentage of the population that do. Folks comment saying "you could buy a brand new Merc for that sort of money". What!!. To sit in traffic jams, be wound up by "wallies", frustrated by "plods" and road works....etc.
OR
"Listen to great music" I reply.
I know which I prefer.

Geoff,
That should be framed! Well I am going to remember it anyhow!
Currently listening to Beatles 1967-1970, disc two. Actually I put the wrong disc in. I prefer what is on the first!

Dear Fredrik,
I prefer disc one too, but there's some great stuff on disc two (I love While My Guitar Gently Weeps).

I'll second that. Great record. VSOPII, where they replaced Freddie Hubbard with Winton Marsalis was very ordinary though
Yes, I have always felt that Winton is technically brilliant but lacks the creativity that would make him a great jazz musician. His playing comes off as more slick than soulful

I'd agree. That said, what really put me off Marsalis is his snobbery (in terms of contending that there is one single, definable thing called jazz and that some branches don't really count) and his behaviour towards Miles Davis in the early 80s, the sheer arrogance of which beggars belief. First off his comments such as berating him for "co-signing white boys" and some of his music being "more like warmed-over turkey". This was then followed by attempting to go on stage with Davis in Canada during the middle of his gig (Marsalis was, in fact, due to play the next day). Davis twice ordered him off the stage but Marsalis refused to leave, so Davis stopped the band until he went!
I should reference Ian Carr's wonderful Davis biography from which I have lifted both the quotes and that anecdote (a must read for any Davis fans, and, fankly, anyone else who loves music).

Now, that's been said a bit tongue in cheek, Geoff, right ? I have been sitting inside your beautiful car, already. Nothing to complain on THAT side, either...
cheers

Shame on you, Tam. You MUST possess D Brain avec HvK. If not, you're pissing in a bottle behind the bikesheds (and I've no idea where that came from!).

I have three, the other two are Civil/Klemperer/Philharmonia and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. (So no HvK I'm afraid - I'm not his greatest fan. Then again, glancing in the penguin guide it seems to get rave reviews there too, so I'll keep an eye out for it.)
Interestingly, while we're on Mozart, I finally got a chance to listen to some of the E Kleiber Figaro the other weekend visiting a relative (it's now on my 'must buy' list).

p.s. I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about with your second sentence!

Dear Tam and Graham,
After the Beatles, earlier on, and I did listen to Disc One (from the 1967-1970 anthology) afterwards, I listened to Alan Civil and Otto Klemperer in the Four Mozart Horn Concertos in a row. I just noted the Dennis Brain set stting right next the player. The Civil set is my favourite!
All the best from Fredrik. [once more].
PS: Just put on Beethoven Fifth. BPO Furtwangler 1942 or 3. Now that is a performance to remove a few cobwebs! Now where is that start button!

Dear Fredrik,
I got word from Amazon yesterday that that box of live Furtwangler recordings from 42-44 that I ordered a while back has finally been shipped (which I got primarily for the Mozart 39 and the Schubert Great). I notice it also has a 5th so I assume it's the same one. I had been hoping to enjoy it this weekend but it has yet to turn up
