What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Beethoven violin concerto Rohn/Furtwangler/BPO recorded live in 1944. For reasons passing understanding I've been rather dismissive of this work in the past (perhaps because I'd only heard the Stern/Bernstein/NY reading). This new disc is a wonderful performance and very moving, arrived this morning as part of a DG box of live Furtwangler recordings 42-44 (bought mainly for the Mozart 39, also wonderful). I've also been enjoying the 4th, 5th and 7th symphonies and am still looking forward to the Schubert great (for 12 quid on amazon this was an absolute steal - sadly they've now upped the price to over 20, still worth it though).

regards, Tam

Disc 1 of the Barbirolli Sibelius set that I picked up from the PO today - expect a serious shoot out of various versions of 2nd Symphony by same conductor but different bands

one of my oldest and dearest CDs. (Currently in a guitar / Gismonti phase). Can't get enough of these 12-string master pieces)

Her indoors was having none of Sibelius, so I am letting the Count swing things back in order

Just done listening to the Furtwangler/BPO Schubert 9 from the set listed above (though, interestingly, and, I suppose, correctly, they number it 8). Stunning stuff, possibly I even prefer it to the wonderful Erich Kleiber account (not sure will have to listen again). I definitely prefer it to Furtwangler's 50s recording.

Interestingly, according to the notes, these recordings were made for German radio during the war and then taken back to Moscow by the Russians and didn't emerge 'till the late 80s.

Anyway, a stunning box from start to finish - now I want the second!

regards, Tam

Live with me - new track from Massive Attack compilation. An exceptional vocal performance by Terry Callier. Song of the year for me thus far.

The video accompanying the song is quite disturbing, but somehow fits.

I have all the early Rats on vinyl, but totally missed out on the clash at the time, strange!

Don't know what I was up to, this is a fantastic album.

Really nice Geoff.
Two fantastic albums, I'll listen to them tonight. Clap hands etc is one of my absolute top records since 1997 or 98, when I walked into a hifi shop in Oslo (Audiofreaks) and my first copy of Somethin' else was bought In Oslo at Torggatan. Well, I'm rambling now.

late night headphone sesh:

Ghazal - "The Rain" (ECM); a fabulous live recording of Indian and Persian improvisations. these guys are channeling something from above - sublime and beautiful.

Kronos Quartet & Asha Bhosle - "You've Stolen My Heart" (Nonesuch). R.D. Burman's Bollywood music is genius.

Absolutely expansive, lush, Palais of Versailles, Kraftwerk with emotion, D.A.F, erotic, elusive, gorgeous, sumptous, souring strings, emotional keyboards, vaudeville, circus big top, waltzing, it's all here and more. Indulge, you know your worth it!!!!!

For the 3rd time in a row. Can't believe how beautiful this 1992 recording is. Brahem leaves all the necessary space to his co-players (on some songs completely without him, even), the best one being the title track.

Or, ist it the Maggies that make this SO enjoyable ?

Haim ! Where art thou ? Elections are over. You need to listen to this !

cheers

Goddam the old stuff is still good!

The last one is Wes Montgomery "Movin along"

Seeing this on your post Geoff made me search it out.

A good album marred for me by my predudice againt flutes in Jazz.

sloop

The amount the flute has to say is minimal. The compensation is the presence of Victor Feldman IMO an excellent jazz pianist and a rare english presence in american jazz of this time. It is ironic that both he and Montgomery had their careers cut sadly short.
