What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Just got this one on vinyl. It's also pretty good:

Spurred by the recent thread, I've got my Gilels/Jochum Brahms concertos out. I still prefer Fleisher/Szell in the first, not sure about the second. More listening clearly required. Winker Anyway, has me waiting all the more eagerly for my Jochum/Brahms symphonies to turn up.

regards, Tam

For the 3rd time in a row. Can't believe how beautiful this 1992 recording is. Brahem leaves all the necessary space to his co-players (on some songs completely without him, even), the best one being the title track.

Or, ist it the Maggies that make this SO enjoyable ?

Haim ! Where art thou ? Elections are over. You need to listen to this !

cheers
Stefan

Stefan,

Got back two days ago and listening now to the Conte de l'incroyable amour. Thank you for reminding me of this neglected CD. I heard Brahem live in Chicago, though he was playing with Erkose & Hosni the music of Cafe Astrakan. A magnificent performance.

How do you like the Maggies and what happend to the Gipfels?

Best regards,

Haim

Haim, good to see you're back !
I still have to see Brahem, I missed him once in Darmstadt, and still regret it... Amongst his records, "Conte..." is special to me, less intellectual, more play- and joy-full, very, very nice, in one word.

I'm enjoying the Maggies quite a bit. Thinking that I paid only little more than a tenth of what the Gipfels cost, I must say they are REALLY worth considering if you are shopping in the 2-3 k$ area. Too much crap, around there. Far away from pefect, they ar able to transport the musical contents, not so much the hifi thingies, though.

The Summits are back in the US, and I will receive a new pair, after Easter.

cheers
Stefan

Just come home from town with the Remaster of Back In Black by that well know Scottish beat combo - AD/DC. It's on now way up and loud.

(Okay so you're gonnas say they're Australian, but the Young brothers were born in Glasgow and only went to Australia in the early 60's, and Bon Scott was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, but raised in Melbourne. Not many people know that. Brian Johnson of course is a Geordie.)

Fabulous purchase. Music from another (not so long gone) world. Sabine Meyer (and additional clarinet players) play with / against a huge barrel organ. Exceptional sound patterns and compositions. Worth every second.

cheers

Well one can sing and the other one can play and it is just the two of them which highlights how good they are at what they do...

Incredible String Band - I Looked Up
Posted on: 15 April 2006 by smiglass

I just heard them last night in San Francisco and they were outstanding. The CD's feature a tribute to the giants of jazz and original music commissioned from each member. They are "live" recordings of performances through out the year then compiled into one package. The group includes artistic director Joshua Redman, the venerable Bobby Hutcherson, Nicholas Payton, Renee Rosnes, Eric Harland, Matt Penman, and several young trombone players. Anyone who appreciates great new music should pick up there work.

Jazz Alley - a show on Lyric FM (our Radio 3 in Ireland - sort of).

The show was showcasing the sound engineer Rudy van Gelder, mainly focusing on his Van Gelder remaster series on Blue Note.

Some excellent music here to add to my next shopping spree.

Lovely all Beethoven afternoon!

Emperor Concerto, Pathetique and Appassionata Sonatas, E Fischer and collegues. then the Violin Concerto with Menuhin in Lucerne.

Beethoven was really the first classical music to really draw me in, and it is nice to return home to old friends from time time!
