What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals - Both Sides of the Gun. Definitely a grower.

Huw, is it true that Harper has stopped hopping back and fro between various musical styles (which leaves you happy only with a few tracks on each CD) ? If so, it might be worth a try for me...

Myself, earlier:

(Winterreise, adapted for small orchestra by Hans Zender. Very recommended...)

Now:

(Nothing to add, here, besides it benefits somehow from a certain treble-shyness of the Maggies. Very pleasant presentation.)

Somehow these just seem to go together nicely.

With Goths On Our Side

My name it is Dai Young,
I'm the king of Welsh Goth,
The village I come from,
Is near Abersoch.

I was brought up on Bauhaus,
And black bedroom walls,
And I had my first snakebite,
When I was in halls.

Now the graveyard is calling,
The sky's getting greyer,
I'll drink the warm blood of the borough surveyor,
And I'll murder the verger,
I've seen how he gawps,
And I'll write on his headstone "Here lies Jones the Corpse".

Now my overweight girlfriend,
She sits and she crimps.
Her mothers convinced shes communing with imps,
Her brothers all right though,
He's a good lad is Wilf,
Cos he's into Placebo and Cradle of Filth.

Deryck Cooke's introduction to Wagner's Ring cycle (in preparation for Radio 3 tomorrow - I must be nuts). That said, this set is a must for serious Wagnerians.

Just trying a bit of Wagner's Ring on Radio 3. I don't think I shall manage too much though! What bit is on at 17:20 hours BST? I have to say even now that I find it quite hard to know where I am in any of these linked pieces, where the same motif can appear several hours apart. Gotterdammerung is the most differentiated in my view, but apart from the Seigfried's Rhine Journey and the Funeral Music I am not at all sure I could identify exactly which bit I was listening to!

Good listening to our Wagnerites, from Fredrik

Dear Fredrik,

We're in the midst of Act II of Siegfried, who has just killed both Fafner the dragon and Mime (the blacksmith/childminder) and he's about to go off questing for Brunnhilde (and having been listening since 8am I've just about lost my mind).
