What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Haim,
Your recommendations are always worth following up, I shall put my order into the Naim shop now.

Nic,
Thank you very much, but as we all know, this music thing is very subjective, and I always hope that I am recommending the right music to the right person.
Espiritu is a not so common duo of piano and guitar but I think I can hear a great synergy between the two instruments here. The sound is very warm and intimate, just as Brazilian music should be.
I hope you enjoy it.
Best regards,
Haim

Ella Fitzgerald: Manhattan! Heavens, "Everytime We Say Say Goodbye," really takes my breath away. It so sad. Also very fond of, "My Funny Valentine." "The Lady Is A Tramp," is a Masterpiece.
Tom Lehrer next, I think...
Fredrik
PS: Layed in some noice beer for the session, so ... Oh God, "I Greet You With A Song In My Heart," and it really is unbearably poignant. Must go.

I had a good time drawing with friends today and finished two pieces. Came home and classical was too slow. so I turned to a rock staion, they seem to play 2 or 3 pieces then about 5 commercials. Clearaudio seems to state they are an advertising medium not a music primary delivery system. So I put on George Harrison's Brainwashed, not his best but good background at a high volumn. Next will be Clapton's Mr Johnson and Me. then I'll have dinner and had two drinks and will pull out some rock vinyl for a long session tonight. I see Steely Dan, springsteen's River, and who knows what else. But probably end with Rickie lee Jones and Joni Mitchell about midnight.

Tam, I got as far as Bewitched, so far! Tomorrow, I think it will be more serious, but I have my 'Light Of Heart' head on, so I shall enjoy being let of my own leash!
I bet Jochum is superb in the not so little First Symphony. I adore that piece! Fredrik

Ian,
a great album.
'Company' is my favourite tune and I still have a difficult time listening to it without water in my eyes.

Absolutely wonderful album. I bought it on release then bought tickets to see her in Edinburgh, her first ever tour out of America and have seen her numerous times since. Her follow up 'Pirates' in my opinion is even better. I bought a video of her's awhile back which was a mix between her life story and a live concert. She had a pretty tough life especially her early days. 'We belong together' from Pirates makes me bubble like a baby........ Sorry i think this is a different thread.
RLJ is one of my all time favourite artists.
Enjoy

Haim,
Full marks to the Naim store for efficiency, this came in the post this morning, after ordering yesterday!
Getting first listen now, very nice and relaxing so far, great sound.
I noticed on the credits that Julian Vereker is responsible for mastering, and that the talented Anna Tooth is responsible for being both the manager and the photographer. Nothing like keeping it in the family.
Thanks Haim.

Indeed he is. In fact, his entire cycle is a real favourite of mine. Sadly it's languished in archive limbo for much of its life, recorded as it was in the junction between mono and stereo. However, it ranks as one of the two or three complete cycles I would happily live with as my only one (though, interestingly enough, it doesn't contain any of my favourite readings of any of the symphonies).

Nic,
That was super fast. I am glad you are already listening to Espiritu . I think that the great sound has to do a lot also with Ken Christianson who is a great sound engineer, our NAIM dealer in Chicago and a hell of a guy.

Alina is very delicate slow moving pieces of piano & violin and piano & cello alternating. It is my favourite Arvo and I listen to it a lot at home but not in car where the noisy ride basicly kills it.
Hi Haim!
I went to town this morning and got it plus a Sokolov's Chopin sonata n°2 op.35 and etudes op.25 on Opus111.
The record is very delicate and touching.
I don't know who this girl Alina was in Part's life, but such dedicated music is one of the best written for a woman.
Cheers
Gianluigi

Gianluigi,
Good. I always thought that Alina was great company. Who is Sokolov and how good is he? We have a high school named Sokolov in Jerusalem but I am sure it is named after someone else.

Hi Haim!
Grigory Sokolov.
The nonconformist!

The only things i know is that he was born in Leningrad in 1950 and get his first award at 16 of age at the Cajkovskij contest in Moscow from Emil Giles.
The purists say they don't like him because of his "romantik" way that collides with ancient orthodoxy.
Somebody speak of him like a painter than a musician.
I have these tow records both on Opus111 label.
