What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Even as a vinylslutnut (oops, nearly made a mistake there!) I have to agree with you about those re-masters. Though last year's Big Guns Best-Of Boxed Set (hybrid SACD CD) is a bit like pressing the loudness button on my trusty 1978 Marantz 2238B receiver through Celestion Ditton 110's (study second system)...
If you don't mind me saying so, shared interest Naim, Rory, music and all, if I ever get over to Dublin (ostensibly to see my friend Kieran, of whom I hope there are many) perhaps we ought to meet up for a pint!
Good listening,
James
Sure you could join me and my friends down the local

After missing my Air F****e flight from Paris, calming down with the beautiful
[piccie]
Peace,
Stefan
Stefan my friend,
You remind me of my daughter who missed her flight to Boston two weeks ago. She was sitting at the gate, talking to me on the phone, and wandering why her plane was taxing away from the gate...
No Charles Lloyd (not even Canto) could calm me down.
I also hope you have a better excuse than she did (they did not anounce the last boarding of the flight).
If by any chance you decide to take my humble word and get Canto, please let me know if you still think that Chrles is improving, or did he peak in 1999.
Regards,
Haim
Dear Haim,
Not so sure about what you mean by "excuse" (mine would be: the Paris taxi driver was incredibly slow - unbelievable, I know...), but I know that I have (again) expressed myself not clear enough re:Lloyd.
Let's try:
- I do see that I favour some of his recordings, which others don't(wheras I like some others don't)
- I like the fact that more and more Lloyd stuff comes out (usually through ECM, not always brand new)
- I tend to prefer his less "mainstream free" (if this exists) stuff. His work with Higgins for example was great
- Everytime he steps away from the usual Jazz concepts (even if things get a tad simplistic, at times) like with Sangam - I like what he's doing
- Canto is on order
Ach, you know ? Isn't the goal reached when music floats my (or your) boat ? Looking at what I've written here, seems all too theoretic, now... Let's see how Canto works for me !
Peace
Stefan

An historic recording now on CD - the sound quality is dreadful. Of interest only to Soft Machine and Caravan nuts - of which I'm one, but buy all the regular CDs first and leave this till last (or even after that), even the CDX2 struggles with this.

10 CD box with 10 "classic" Jazz Sax players that I bought for 10 EUR, today. Totally crappy box, but shows that my system makes even THIS sound great if there's music inside. (Through Webster and Parker, already...)

Stefan Yavrum,
As long as you did not give the French cab driver instructions in.. Turkish you are innocent. You could also have taken the UN car to France...
I like to give you grief about Charles since he is so close to your heart. You might find Canto 'less spectacular' than most of his albums, but I still think it is his best work and I definitely feel that you should hear it. I kind of cooled off after seeing him live at Orchestra Hall in Chicago and I did not get his last two discs. However, Sangam is on order.
Peace (how do you say it in German?),
Haim

Back to Mozart piano concerto nr 20 again (Haskil). A wonderful Fiske nomination. Last time I enjoyed this it was on a plane from my MP3 player and crappy earphones - the performance still shone through.
