What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Interesting concept of sampling video rather than audio to make a tune. Support for Greenpeace and all that.

Not a tune for all but certainly for me......

Peter - does Songs of Freedom have alternative takes of the songs? I just looked at the track listing and it has so many (if not all) Bob's great songs. He really was a marvellous artist in every respect.

Best regards, Rotf

Dear Gianluigi,
Gyorgy Kurtag was another Haim recommendation. Now, it's a "browse teh shelves and pick something which might be good (and is)" purchase:

less "serious", but more "suited" for the time of day...

I guess it is a Bosendorfer afternoon for me. From 290 Imperial (Further Attempts with my warmest recommendation) to 280 (Gonzalo Rubalcaba's Solo with Stefan's warm recommendation).

I know I will have to end the evening with Milcho Leviev's Man From Plovdiv where he does his Bulgarian melodies on his..Bosendorfer.

So, instead of Bon Soir, I wish you all Bosendorfer Soir.

Dear Haim!
For the few i could value about your courtesy and kindness i think that having your wife as an english teacher would be a pleasure for me.
I've had a lot of private teacher i've met after work for grammar and conversation.
Now....not everything went into my brain, but i do very like and value your language much.
Here, where i live, i have no chance to speak it but even the short written conversations i can have here do gladdens me.
Expecially when i have them with people like you or other good guys that i daily meet here.

Thanks for appreciation!
Cheers!

Dear Christian,

Two of us on real beer!

Myself I have been listening all day actually, and have just put on Bach's First Brandenberg Concerto (Two an Three follow) as I turn out the lights! [Scola Canturum Basiliensis/ August Wenzinger, and definately long unobtainable, sadly].

Good night to all of you from Fred

Rotf,

The simple answer to your question is Yes, there are numerous mixes throughout the 4 discs.

I became so attached to Bob Marley's music when a 6 month posting to Jamaica in 1992 lasted 4 1/2 years, all of which was spent in an apartment block next door to the Marley residence on Hope Road, Kingston! Not that that would have counted for anything if the music wasn't so all encapsulating of the vibe / culture of Jamaica, particularly post independence. To me, it defines the spirit of the country and it's impact there and beyond cannot be overstated.

Having said all that, I have never actually bought any of his original albums - shame on me!

For your info, the following tracks on the 4 cd's are mixes (NB Disc 1 contains several tracks which were the "original original" mixes before they made it onto the albums):

Disc 2: Trenchtown Rock, I'm Hurting Inside, I Shot the Sheriff (Live);

Disc 3: Jammin (12"), Waiting In Vain (Advert Mix), Exodus (12"), Three Little Birds (Alternate), Keep on Moving (London Version), Is This Love (Horns Mix);

Disc 4: Ride Natty Ride (12"), Comin in From the Cold (12"), Could You Be Loved (12"), One Love/People Get Ready (12"), Redemption Song (Live in Pittsburgh).

My experience of box sets is that they look great and I tend to place them on a shelf and leave them there. This one is an exception. All in all, a great collection of music.

Did the Rubalcaba bring you similar joy to the joy it brought to me ?

I must say having seen musicians play life and THEN listen to their records is always diffenrent to me. So it is with Rubalcaba. I very much like both his playing and his sound on the last solo record.

cheers

Stefan,

I enjoy Rubalcaba's a lot. How can you be a bad musician with such a name? I played it twice this evening while preparing Indian rice, cutting an Israeli salad and grilling a roast outside. What can I say? the food had a flavour of a Cuban Bosendorfer.

The only other work by him that I have is part of the Montreal tapes (radio) of 1989 with Charlie Haden. He was already exceptional then.

Have a good night and thanks for the recommendation,

Haim
