What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Just listened to the first side of this after several botched attempts

I bought this after hearing Jan Garbarek for the first time on Bobo Stenson's rarum on Witchi-Tai-To.

Obviously those of you who know Garbarek will know how suprised I was with his rarum.

I have had trouble getting past the first 3 tracks. Today I got to track 4 Lillekort and this is simply beautiful. Track one I have always found brilliant.
Apart from The Path and Aichuri I have found this a hard album to gel with. It just doesn't draw me in at all.

I'm hoping to enjoy the second cd more as this has more collaborations on it.

To those who know how representative is cd 1 rarum of Garbarek? Is it someone who I maybe am not detined to "dig"?

SJB,
Not a HUGE Garbarek fan, myself, but a few comments:

1. Garbarek is SO speaker dependent. Wrong speakers and it will be a torture to follow his horn.
2. some of his stuff is plain kitsch or not enjoyable. others is great stuff for the "Northern hall of fame". see also 4.
3. Seeing him is totally different. Have had teh opportunity, a few times, and must say he knows how to catch
4. I have NOT ONE of the rarum CD's, for two reasons: as with all "samplers", they lack context of the original album. Exactly your problem. And: Of the artists I likek, I have all relevant CDs anyway Winker...

so...

dunno.

Excellent songs and vocals from the lovely Karin Bergquist. And all recorded in a living room I believe !

Some more C Kleiber. Earlier, exerts from his Tristan which, while it seemed at first, excessively fast, had some rather lovely moments. Now his Brahms 4, fine but not, to these ears, unduly remarkable (sorry Graham!).

In the car tonight:

Buenos Aires Madrigal / MA Recordings

La Chimera
Furio Zanasi, voice
Ximena Biondo, voice

Gianluigi,

This pure magic is for you. You would probably enjoy it more than me since I cannot understand the Italian/Spanish lyrics:

http://www.marecordings.com/main/product_info.php?cPath...7131ca49c5129d5a82a0

A journey through the fundamental subject areas that inspired both the old Italian madrigal and the Buenos Aires tango. Through Argentina and Italy, with their musicians and music. Through the instruments of both worlds which sing and converse, each with their own voice, their different languages and shared stories. Through migrations, solitude, conflicts, absence, dance, dreams and death. Through the "places of the soul" of these people, united and marked by irreparable losses, voyages of no return, hopes on the other shore, exercises in nostalgia.

I've just listened to cd 2 and now feel a bit like someone who heard "knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan, went out and bought an anthology and was horrified as Highway 61, Ballad of a thin man thrundled through the speakers.

CD 2 is much more to my taste, my song with Keith Jarrett is a thing of simple beauty. All but one or two of the songs interest me and draw me in.

Thanks Stefan,

points well made, thankfully my speakers do his playing justice.

I'm not a "greatest hits" fan myself but sometimes you have to start somewhere and as I was taking my first steps in European Jazz the rarum series seemed like as good a place as any to start.

Regards
John

Posted on: 02 May 2006 by Rasher

And I'm working really really fast and I have to go for a pee and I haven't got the time to go so I'm just carrying on like you do but I want another coffee too so I'll have to go get that as well and maybe have a pee at the same time but the phone is ringing but I can't be bothered to answer it because I need to get this work done and I just haven't got the time to stop so I'll carry on until I really really need to go and I'm on the second disc now and it's getting really fast and my work is flying and if I could just work like this all the time I would be rich in no time although I probably wouldn't have the time to spend it unless I could run out to the shops quickly but I'm meeting some friends for a few beers tonight and I'll probably spill most of it like I always do but hey that's life eh hey is that the time.....

Dear Haim!
Thanks a lot again!
I'm still writing that list.
The guys at JPC are blocking my card since more than a month.
They say it's expired and my institute says no.
I sit between them and wait.
I hope they're to sort it out soon or my card will really get to his expiration day!
Smile
Shame because the shop have an incredible range of products....................

Meanwhile i'm listening to this:

Hi Gianluigi,
Just to add another point-of-view to JPC (which is by far my favorite shop): I've sent them an email, 2 years or so ago, to "complain" about both the 50 EUR minimum (for free delivery) and the slightly higher prices - compared to Amazon (which has lost a couple of my orders, already and was very slow to fix it). JPC's reaction was a very fair explanation of their price model (and the costs they have on a geographically rather limited market) and the free shipping limit. At the end of this (not pre-formulated - as amazon does it) they told me about the permanent discount the've granted me on ALL purchases from that moment on (discount has been raised, a year later).

From that moment on, I try to get as much from them (and not from Amazon) as I can (exception: used or "Cayman kind of" CD's through amazon.

cheers
Stefan

The Holly Bears The Crown by The Young Tradition with Shirley and Dolly Collins - what a great album.
Posted on: 02 May 2006 by Gianluigi Mazzorana
Hi dear Stefan!
I did try this first purchase by them.
A friend gave a list of records and, surfing the net, i discovered that 5 of the 7 titles he gave me were avaible on JPC.
So i placed the order plus a cd i decided to get.
Six CDs to lower the shipping cost.
It was the end of march and after 10 days they mailed me writing that my card institute was "unable to accept my card details".
The fact is that i have a credit card i use for internet purchases only and that i keep under close control just to avoid frauds and so on.
Money was there and they were not able to get them!
Incredible!
After 1 month 6 of the Cds i ordered just came.
The last, mine of course, was in back order.
Today another e-mail: "your credit card institute can's accept..............".
So now i have to wait 15 days more and wait for my money to get back on my disposal and ready to be diverted on their account.
Of course this is only a case that can occour.
A fatality.
But i guess, dear Stefan, that they'll never see my "face" no more.
Smile
I'll go again with Amazon.
In case of back order they don't block your card for weeks!

Ciao!

PS: pure curiosity..............what are you listening to?

Guten Abend!
